Swaledale – 16th & 17th September – first course map now available

Swaledale

Steve Willis has been hard at work again planning the Swaledale events on Saturday 16th and Sunday 17th September. On Saturday you will be riding the trails north of the river across the Arkengarthdale East and Reeth Estates who manage the moors either side of the steep sided Arkengarthdale valley.

On Sunday you’ll be riding south of the river on the Grinton and Bolton Estates, either side of Apedale and the northern slopes of Wensleydale. It is always really challenging riding in Swaledale so fortunately we have been given permission to use many of the private gravel tracks.

Camping is available all weekend at the Dales Bike Centre. Please let Steve know in advance if you are bringing a tent or caravan and pay at Registration (£5 per adult per night). You can also book bunkhouse accommodation directly with DBC.

On Saturday you can start between 9.30 and 10.30 or 12.00 and 12.30 so please let Steve know your preference. Free refreshments both days and prizes for the leading riders’ combined scores in the usual categories.

Hope to see you there

Malham – results and report

Malham 2023

Malham 2023

Here’s Simon’s report from Saturday at Malham:

I hope you all enjoyed the change of course this year at Malham.
Given the amount of rainfall this year, I felt that venturing west would guarantee the best tracks and riding conditions with the bonus of stunning scenery.

Course wise, I wanted to give scope for varied route choice whilst trying to temp plenty to the brilliant tracks around Austwick. Judging by the many positive comments at the finish everyone enjoyed their rides despite the hills!

On the day we were blessed with great weather with only a few falling foul of the showers and hail on the tops towards the end.

Tom & Tim presentation

Tom Gibbs & Tim Evans trophy presentation

Congratulations to all category winners and particularly Tom Gibbs who ‘cleared up’ with less than two minutes to spare to retain the splendid Malham trophy.

Massive thanks to Tim Evans for his help with the mapping and registration and also Dave Robertson for the Web updates.

Thanks also to Chris Wildman for his help with the venue at Malham Show and the National Park Centre for use of the green.

Thanks for everyone’s patience whilst we sort out the results. Needless to say, the settings for Cropton, Swaledale and Wykeham & Broxa will be double checked!

Revised scores are in the spreadsheet here with a final version due asap.

Cropton Forest – Results, Map & Report

Great weather and a great turnout for todays event at Cropton Forest.

I have ridden the tracks kin a lot of different conditions over the past few months, so was intrigued to see how everyone would get on.

MapRun Results here

I tried to plan the course so that a good scores were possible for the majority, and avoiding the worst of the tracks. I wasn’t sure if anyone would get to all the controls, but 3 riders managed that! Congratulations to Andy, Andrew and Ifor!!! You can see their routes on MapRun.

Lewisham Bank is tough on the legs up to the top, but I felt worth the reward (albeit I could possibly have factored in the train timetable for those riders who had to wait at the level crossing!)

#27 was the control where about 50% of riders had a problem (but it was fine for the other 50%). I think it’s one of the best bridleways in the forest so worthwhile.

Technically, this was mostly a troublefree event with only a couple of problems. the main issue seems to be making sure the MapRun notification works loudly enough!!

Very positive feedback at the end (expect possibly for #18 – fine from the west but tougher from the north track up the steep byway!) Some riders new to MapRun and some new to the whole format today too which is encouraging.

Most riders managed to modify their own MapRun scores (to include #27 etc), using the ‘HITMO’ function and uploading a manual revision. But any problems please get in touch this week so we can finalise the results.

Lost property – a phone and car keys were returned to theor owners, but there were a pair of bifocal cycling glasses found – they’re in the the box for the next event if they’re yours.

Course feed back very welcome – it’s challenging to plan a forest course and I know there are some good tracks I missed out!

Here are the course maps for the 2 events on the Bank Holiday weekend.

Saturday 26th August – Malham Show – online entry here

From Simon: A slight change of course for this year which I’m sure you’ll all enjoy. I had a great ride round yesterday checking the controls and despite recent rain it was still almost all dry and fast!

Parking and registration are as last year at the north end of the show field (left at the green before the National Park Centre).

The start will again be opposite the Methodist Chapel & tearooms on the road to the village. Finish will be on the green.

Entry fee includes free entry to Malham show for each rider.
I look forward to seeing you all Saturday.

Monday 28th August – Cropton Forest – online entry here

The start/finish for Cropton Forest will be at Rawcliffe Motors, Stape  (red circle on the map). This isn’t the White Rose site, but saves time driving in and out of the forest. Facilities will be a bit limited (there will be a toilet) but we think it’s the best option.

The is the first time at Cropton since 2018, and our first timing using MapRun here which has presented a bit of a challenge. Forest conditions have also been very varied over the past couple of months – the same track has been hard, dry tracks and later an stream of water. The course design should provide a good challenge for experienced riders, but good scores for everyone. (Note there is still a bit of markup to complete on the Cropton map for soft ground etc, but the area is correct

For people attending the full White Rose weekend, there will be a short MapRun course available to use at any point over the weekend for anyone to test out MapRun on a bike or on foot.

We’re just finalising the start/finish details and these should be available next week. There’s not been a NYMBO event at Cropton Forest since 2018, and there’s a bit of work to finalise the map with the correct tracks, but here’s an idea of the area the event will cover. More details soon.
