Chop Gate Event report & Control Map

Thank you to everyone who competed on Saturday.  We got some great weather and it was good that it wasn’t too hot. Although we did get a couple of riders stopping for a mud bath on the Lordstones to Clay Bank track.

It was good to see plenty of routes chosen. I must apologies for not doing a recce on the bridleway off Cold Moor from control 29 down to 19.  It was the obvious connecting route. Schoolboy error on my part.

I’d also walked down off Urra Moor to #3 but that was a few weeks ago before the track was overgrown with bracken making it a tricky descent on Saturday.

Well done to Andy C for a round of almost 500.

I think the other bit of learning for me is to have the start in the shade on a sunny day to allow people to look at their smartphones and watches more clearly as they are getting ready to start.

Hope to see you over the bank holiday weekend.  Have a great summer.

——

Thanks to Conrad and Jill for organising last Saturday’s event!

Here’s the control map; Tim is sorting out the various manual changes to the results (mostly, it seems, due the lack of mobile signal at the Village Hall where results didn’t upload automatically). The MapRun results and the tracks that everyone took are available here (and details in this post if you had any issues)

Chop Gate Provisional Results

At least today’s event was before its gets properly hot! Certainly my own score reflects how challenging I found today’s course, and my less than optimal route choice!!

Full report from Conrad to follow, in the meantime, the MapRun link for today is here

If MapRun worked fine for you – please make sure your results are uploaded (with patchy mobile signal at the Village Hall this might not have happened.

If MapRun didn’t work and you used Strava – then you can upload your track in the ‘results section of MapRun

If MapRun didn’t work and you’ve got a gpx of your route – then send that with you score to the email address below and we’ll add it manually.

If you were late – hopefully Conrad has a note of your penalty points, if not please email them in.

Send any gpx files to events@nymbo.org

Let us know if any other issues, finalised results as soon as Conrad is able to sort them out!

Fearby report, map and final results

*updated* Finalised results can be found here 20220618-fearby_final

Thanks to David Day for planning last saturday’s event, his report is below along with the control map.

Provisional results are here – please report any issues no later than Friday 24th please – 20220618-fearby_prov

There were 45 riders on a glorious day with fantastic views across North Yorkshire [the Black swan pub garden famously claims to have the longest view from any English beer garden – Ferrybridge power station is visible. We were last at Fearby in 2009 & I used a similar area this year.

I tried to have the pre-start far enough away from the actual start so that riders’ time did not start until they were closer to the start triangle. This mostly worked but there were a handful of devices that triggered at the pre-start so next time it needs to be even further from the start.

Most riders used phones [just 4 watches] with a few problems of phones going to sleep or losing signal. 3 tracks are missing from MapRun results, we are trying to get riders to upload these. Several riders had trouble locating #12; I am happy that the map is correct & the location on Google Earth is correct but accept that there is a multitude of tracks in the area & should have chosen a more identifiable spot for the control which was a henge [earthwork]/BW. Competitors who had difficulty in finding the control were all too far N but we have allowed any who visited Nutwith Common the 15 points. It is possible to widen the MapRun search area for this [or any] control by altering the tolerance: 3 horizontal lines in top RH corner of phone screen give options to widen the search.

There was a farm access road W of #16 which was not mapped & caused confusion, the next map will show this road.

MapRun penalties only work up to 5 mins late, so have been manually adjusted for those that exceeded this, giving nett scores of:   1st = David Lawrance M40 375 points, 2nd Nuno Cerqueira M21 361, 3rd Paul Dobson M60 325, all these riders went W then anticlockwise missing out the NW corner. M50 was won by Mark Rowley 324; M70 Steve Willis 304.

1st Lady = Sheila Pearce W50 280 points, 2nd Angela Brand-Barker W60 255; 1st Mixed Andrea & Steve Foster 244; Gen = Mark & Tom Simpson 150.

Coxwold control map, report and finalised results

Here are  the draft results that will be sent to BMBO for incorporation into the BMBO league and used for the NYMBO League, please can you check yours are correct by the 10th June.

I thoroughly enjoyed my shorter ride round the lanes and really enjoyed not having to finish by going up white horse bank , thanks to Andy for an interesting course and obtaining permission to use the Rievaulx sporting estate tracks in Bradley Howl, Tanker Dale and Nettledale I made sure my route took me into them , sadly I also missed an easy 30 descending White Horse bank.

I hope you are all getting used to Maprun from a planners perspective it really does make life easier, this time we had the tolerance set at 25m which seemed to cause a couple of issues , so we may revert to 30m next time it depends where David places his controls. We also tried online tracking and this kept Andy amused whilst you were out and we will use again next time as it alerts is if you haven’t moved for 5 minutes , a useful but not failsafe safety feature as it doesn’t work with watches or poor mobile reception.

On the admin front please can you check your name on maprun is spelt correctly and you have your names the correct way round, I have to transfer the scores into the correct format for the BMBO league and if you all did this it would make my life much easier. We also spotted a few riders had gone down a footpath , in hindsight we  should have made this Out of Bounds as it was the continuation of a BOAT,  can I  remind you that footpaths marked on the map are always out of bounds as it can make future events harder to get permissions for if we get complaints.

Our next event is on June 18th on the moors above Masham planned by David Day – I look forward to seeing many of your there.

Course map for Coxwold – Saturday 28th May – online entry open – UPDATED!

The next NYMBO summer league event is on Saturday May 28th, with the event base at Coxwold Village Hall, YO61 4BB.

Online Entry closes midnight Thursday 26th
20% discount if you entry by Wednesday night

The event map uses a mixture of lanes, byways, and bridleways and we have special permission for the event to use the private gravel tracks in the dry valleys of Bradley Howl, Tanker Dale and Nettledale near Cold Kirby and Scawton, which are great to ride.

There will be no catering at the village hall but Coxwold has a tea shop just around the corner that will be open from 11am to 4pm. There is also the Fauconberg Arms pub / restaurant just up the hill.

Parking will be in the car park behind the village hall and with an overflow area on the grass playing field behind the hall. Please drive very carefully / slowly past the hall to the car parking area as the access is quite narrow and there may be children going to the play area or tennis courts.

High Paradise Farm – Control Map

Here’s the control map for last weekend’s event at High Paradise Farm. John Dixon planned an interesting course that allowed everyone to get a decent score, and Andy and Nuno to get all 30 controls. The MapRun results so everyone’s track if you are interested in checking out the routes that people took. John’s update and event results table in the post below.

MapRun Track

MapRun Track

MapRun worked really well on Saturday, with only a couple of issues at the start and riders losing signal enroute. Everyone managed to upload their results, which is a good measure of success!

Start/Finish arrangements – one lesson from the weekend is that we need to improve the start and finish as MapRun to make sure we know exactly who is riding. Safety is really important and we want to make sure we get that right.

Registration & Start: it’s essential that everyone signs on at registration. We’re going to make this clearer to reduce the possibility of a rider going straight to the start. With SI controls we had a start list, but we don’t get that automatically with MapRun.

Finish: everyone needs to report to the finish to record their time and any penalties. there can sometimes be a delay with the MapRun upload (Garmin watch users are an example) so we’ll make this a bit more obvious. As always, if you decide to retire please make sure you report to the finish.

Emergency contact details: please make sure that your emergency contact details are up to date on the BMBO site. We have a list of riders contacts at each event and will use this to get in touch if we need to – so having your correct mobile number is important.

Feedback welcome if there’s anything else you think we need to consider!

The next event is at Coxwold on May 29th – online entry is open now

Our first league event for this year enjoyed sunshine and only a light breeze – a contrast from the previous few days.

All the MapRun results are available via the appp or at this link. Remember that these results aren’t adjusted for penalties.

The results table, with penalties applied, is below – please get in touch if something doesn’t look right!

Thanks to John Dixon for planning this event, here’s his report:

A few good days meant the tracks were dry for the 53 riders who turned up on a sunny Saturday at High Paradise. The course was (hopefully) laid out so that most people could reach the high scores
and the fitter/faster/smarter riders had to go a bit further to mop up the lower values.

In fact two riders – Andy Conn & Nuno Cerquiera cleaned up – Andy with an impressive 23minute margin. Most were comfortably home in just under the 3 hours with quite respectable scores. Just a reminder to be careful on the public highways.

Catering at High Paradise is first class and many stayed back to enjoy sandwiches, cake, coffee and scones afterwards.

This is early days for Maprun and although the benefits are numerous it does take some getting used to! More than one rider had to be guided by the ever so patient Tim Evans to get started.
There are lessons to be learned in recording starters and finishers but all in all a grand day out
