Happy New Year! Next event – Tholthorpe – Saturday January 20th

David Day has been out riding snorkelling his way around the bridleways and lanes north of York to plan our next event at Tholthorpe.

The Venue is the New Inn, Tholthorpe, which has exactly the sort of pub lunch menu you’ll want after a couple of hours riding in January!

  • Parking will be in the pub car park until that’s full and then tidily in the village.
  • Please order food at registration before you start.
  • Beware if intending to use Aldwark Toll Bridge – it is closed until ‘early 2024’.

Tholthorpe is another flat area, the only hills are bridges over the railway line! Hopefully, we’ll have some drier weather over the next couple of weeks to let the tracks dry out a bit, but there are no main roads to negotiate & most of the BWs are hard except where marked.

The course map will be published here in the next couple of days when Tim has had a chance to finalise.

Online entry (closes midnight Thursday 18th)

Don’t forget that it’s that time of year when you’ll need to renew you BMBO membership too

Scorton Lakes Report & Results

It was such a pity that the cold crisp weather couldn’t last another week. The tracks were firm and frozen when I checked the course last Friday. I wondered if Martin Edwards might manage to clear the course but due to the mud he had to leave out 4 controls. I thoroughly enjoyed planning the course and was glad to be able to use the track network around the old gravel pits. It was always going to be a big decision as to whether to visit Scorton Lakes first or leave them until the end. Unfortunately some riders didn’t have enough time after battling through some very muddy bridleways. Thanks to everyone for your positive comments as you finished!!

A few riders missed the bridleway bend heading towards #30 and ended up riding along the disused railway line by mistake. One rider forgot to turn left at #21 and ended up struggling along a very muddy footpath for 2 km before reaching the road. Thanks for letting me know and no penalties for your accidental mistakes as you weren’t trying to gain an advantage.

Thanks to Ellerton Lakes Cafe for accommodating us and to Tarmac for allowing us to use the tracks around the old gravel pits. Thanks also to Tim for an excellent map and John for looking after Registration

Congratulations to the Category Winners

Scorton Lakes 9th December – Online Entry & course map

Just over a week until our next event at Scorton Lakes on Saturday 9th December.

Online entry is open until midnight Thursday but please enter as soon as possible so we have a good idea of numbers.

You can start with some fine navigation on excellent tracks around the reclaimed gravel pits but please give way to the many walkers and their dogs. Then it’s a variety of quiet country lanes in fairly gentle countryside with just 5 mainly dry bridleways but please take great care crossing or using the 3 busy roads on the map.

Please park at the entrance to the car park leaving the closer spaces for the regular customers and choose your meal beforehand when you register.

It looks like a good forecast for the next few days, cold but dry, so the tracks should be firm but please take care on any icy patches

Event will use Maprun7 with 25m radius on controls , reception is okay at the venue but it is recommended you download in advance and have tried the software on the phone you are using before the event. Any problems please contact NYMBO in advance , short test courses can be supplied if required.

Sicklinghall Report and Results

Here’s Tim’s report and the finalised results for Sicklinghall – apologies for the delay, it’s been a bit busy!! Sicklinghall Results

42 riders turned up on what turned out to be a far better day than originally forecast, with later starters having slightly less rain . I enjoyed my rides checking control placement and knew that even with the rain most tracks would be rideable. My main errors and apologies, was using local knowledge in a couple of places, the Bridleway behind Wood Hall which has changed recently and the bridleway north of the Devils Toe Nail where locals know to keep left and pick up the track, I was unaware that the bridleway crossing the old railway was now more prominent and also not shown on the 1:50.000 map ( it is on the 1:25,000) I can see from the traces that this caught out a few of you and I can only apologise.

Thanks to all of you for turning up and to the Scotts Arms for the hospitality and for the positive comments on my planning which seemed to make you all have to think carefully about where to go. When planning the map I looked at the 2015 and 2019 maps and decided to keep the area about the same and if tracks had been a bit quicker Martin may have got over 500. The trouble is the western route can’t be made shorter as there are no tracks that you would want to use and many of you realised this and committed to it

The results and riders routes are on the maprun server here , and a results summary is here: Sicklinghall Results, Thank you to all those who have uploaded your results, I have assumed a couple of the groups and if I have your score wrong please let me know and I will correct.

Congratulations to Martin Edwards the overall and M40 winner who rode 53 km and scored 385 points, second and 1st M50 was Simon ‘I’m taking it easy ‘ Coiley with 346 points and 3rd and 1st M60 was Paul Dobson with 325 points. 1st M70 was David Day with 302 points ( after an organisers recount!) 1st Ladies were Jemima Parker and Jo Anderson with 225 points , 1st Mixed pair were Lindsey and Robert King with 211 points and 1st Generation were Rik and Ewan Thompson with 174 points. 1st e-bike was Tony Thornley with 295 points
