Here are the final details for the Championship Weekend. Please check here for any further updates during the day.

Weather: the forecast for Saturday isn’t great, please make sure you prepare accordingly and make sure you have a suitable rain jacket with you incase you have to stop as you will get cold very quickly.  Please see the ’emergencies’ note below.

MapRun: this is the first year the Championships will use MapRun. There is a simple tester course available to help you get setup. See previous post for map. A5 printed course maps will be available either from the cafe or Steve’s caravan please return the maps after you have used so others can use. To test the course you need to visit at least one control after the start then the finish.

All 3 courses can be loaded using the QR codes (below) or following this location in the MapRun App. You can only load one course at a time, so load the the one you’ll want first before leaving home.

Saturday: 5 hour course | Sunday 3 hours course

Both days: Registration 0915 -1015, starts from 0930 until 1030.

Start & Finish locations: The starts on both days are different so we know you are doing the correct course but the finish for all courses is the same at just beyond the cafe. All control sites are different on both day. See pictures below.

EMERGENCIES:  Please make sure you have a foil blanket, perry whistle and suitable first aid items. Hopefully most of you are doing this already and have these to hand but we have some spare foil blankets and whistles for you to buy at £2 per item , these are now a compulsory item at NYMBO events. CASH ONLY PLEASE!

Please also make sure to have the event emergency contact numbers (which are on the maps) stored in your phone to make it easy if you need them.

THE FINISH: Please make sure you get checked in when you return and provide a rough idea of your score. You need to do this even if you don’t complete the course as we check you all in and out manually and we don’t want to send search parties out for people sat at home drinking beer!

MAPRUN TIPS:

• please make sure you use the same name in the “user profile” as your BMBO entry so no Tim/Timothys Dave/Davids, Steve/Stephen , Tony/Anthony.
• When we import the results into SI to help Anthony with the national league and to put the correct penalties on, it must match and there may be a 10 point penalty for all those I have to change.
• Make sure your phone/watch is fully charged.
• Running another App, like Strava, so you have two GPX track recording will mean in the event you have an issue with MapRun, the manual upload from the other is an option. We find there’s usually aboutr 1-2 people per event who do this.

Here’s David Day’s area map for next Sunday’s event – now finalised (updated 13/07 20:10)

David’s highlighted two things – firstly, there’s a deep ford that can be walked through but is difficult to ride through due to the cobbled bottom. Secondly, as regular riders in this area may recall, there’s a door in eth North wall of Studely deer park which can be used for access.

The start is south of the campsite, the finish is on the campsite. Note that the finish is in the same location on both days but the start is different (partly to help ensure you have the right course loaded in MapRun.

For the Championship Weekend at Kirkby Malzeard on 19 & 20 July, David Day has created a ‘test’ course that anyone can ride at any time to test out MapRun. This might appeal to both first-time users of MapRun and regular NYMBO riders who want to test their MapRun settings!

The test course has 6 controls plus the start and finish – riding to all the controls should take about 30 minutes but you might choose to just use 1 or 2 to test your phone out. You’ll be able to load the MapRun course from the usual location:

Our July events on the weekend 19th and 20th July form part of the BMBO Championship as well as the 2025 NYMBO League.

We are using Ivy Bank campsite in Kirkby Malzeard as the event centre; this can accommodate tents, caravans, and motorhomes. We have a dedicated area at a special reduced rate – however, unfortunately electric hook-up isn’t available in this area.  The site also has and a Double Decker bus as accommodation, fire pits and hot tubs to hire. Facilities are good with toilets, showers, cafe/bar.
Please book direct with the site if you wish to stay:

3. proceed to choose arrival date number of nights
4. available unit select any pitch; the cost should come up as £10 per night per person.

The village has a pub, fish and chip shop, butchers and general store; nearby Grewelthorpe’s pub The Crown is recommended for food. There will be a marquee for registration and socialising post ride.

Provisional results here, please check and make sure your score is correct. You can revise any missing controls using the HITMO function in MapRun (see FAQ page for details)

“Almost 50 riders turned up for a challenging ride in glorious sunshine. 

The trails were all dry but perhaps a bit more overgrown than when I first visited in April. 

I try to spread the controls so the better riders have to go the extra mile/km to mop up the smaller values. This may be reflected in the close spread of high scores, which, in the absence of some of those better riders, were quite modest, with no-one cracking 400. It may also be the fact that there was a lot of climbing to deal with!

Everyone seemed to have enjoyed the day, despite some tales of woe – punctures, getting lost, maprun not working, the usual carry on.

It was a busy day at High Paradise with a 70th Birthday party in progress, started on Friday afternoon and folk staying until Sunday, plus the regular visitors. Despite the workload HP looked after everyone with the usual good food and smiles. (Just remember, access is horse, bicycle or foot under normal circumstances).

Given the forecast, I’m not sure that Tim needs to print the maps on waterproof paper, but entry by midnight tomorrow night will guarantee you a printed, colour map!!

Parking is in the field behind the cafe (see picture below) along with the Start and Finish locations as marked.

We will be using MapRun Tracking at this event to see if this is helpful from an event safety perspective. As always, please make sure your phone is fully charged and you’ve downloaded the course beforehand. You can turn off the event tracking if you wish. This feature isn’t supported for riders using Garmin MapRun-G (watches can only receive the GPS location, not broadcast it).

The road to High Paradise Farm from Boltby up Sneck Yate Bank isn’t visible on the blank course map, so here’s the extract from the previous map for reference. Take care driving along the single road as the farm track is a bit uneven.

Our next event is on Saturday 21st June when we make a return trip to Paradise Farm near Boltby for the excellent tracks around the edge of the of the North York Moors. John Dixon has been in charge of planning for this one and the event centre has it’s excellent cafe for the end of your ride.

EMERGENCY PROCEDURES

You may be aware that one of our riders had a serious accident at the Bishop Wilton event – he’s making a good recovery. Thankfully, such incidents are very rare at our events. However, it gives us the opportunity to review how we manage them.

1. Improved registration – we are going to make sure that everyone checks their contact details at sign-in and stores the event phone numbers in their phone for easy access. We’re also going to improve the emergency contacts details on the printed map.
2. Mandatory kit – we require all riders to carry an emergency foil blanket and orange emergency ‘perry’ whistle. This aligns with the BMBO kit list. In addition to the compulsory helmet, riders should also carry a small first aid kit (contents at riders discretion).

We’re reviewing a couple of other options as well, but it’s essential that we have procedures that we can operate consistently and effectively for all events and for all riders. For example, riders with a Garmin that has emergency alerts capability are encouraged to set that up and include the event phone number where possible but we can’t make that compulsory!

Thanks to Jon for planning an excellent, challenging course. Here’s his report:

Event 3 of the summer series saw 58 riders starting in Bishop Wilton. The course was based on the Yorkshire Wolds and covered parts of the Wolds Way and Minster Way and the deep chalk valleys of Millington, Thixendale and Fridaythorpe. Most of the high scoring riders took a clockwise route around the course, straight up the 160m climb out of Bishop Wilton and into the hills around Kirby Underdale before coming back through Fridaythorpe, picking up the rest of the points through Millington on the way back. There were loops to be taken round Huggate and Great Givendale for those not wanting to venture so far. Despite the first rain in a month falling overnight the course was still quite dry. The chalk hills usually mean there is very little mud so there was some fast riding even on the paths. GPS seemed particularly sketchy and a number of riders had issues with MapRun tracking so the final results might take a few days to finalise.

The village hall once again proved to be an excellent venue with plenty of parking for a change.

The event was not without some drama as a rider had a fall and suffered a badly injured hip. Special thanks to the three riders who stopped to help and gave up their event to wait for the ambulance (over two hours). This happened near control 8 which is as far away from the Headquarters as possible so even after the ambulance had arrived they had a long ride back into a strengthening headwind!!

Please check your MapRun results – a number of riders found #17 hadn’t registered as the GPS marker was a little way north of the road junction. If you use ‘HITMO’ in the results to amend the control to 40m it should pick it up. Any other problems, get in touch!
