Race Report for Wykeham & Broxa

Our final event for our 2023 league was planned by Steve and Andrea Foster, their race report is below, along with the control map and some photos from the event and the prize-giving. Congratulations to all our category winners this season!

you cna find the results here, please check that your result is there and has uploaded correctly!

Well I’d better start with a heartfelt apology to those who visited the heinous track between the flooded road and Broxa village. ‘Mea Culpa’ for not checking the final copy of the map. Very disappointed in myself as I had ridden 3 other similar tracks and dismissed them from the original planned course. The only excuse is that Tim & I were making changes to the course up until Thursday as FC had some requests to change / move things about. Note to self, learn to do your own map and check everything with a bit more time to spare. For those that said rest of course was great thanks, and for those who were “spitting feathers” at the finish, quite understand.

I think other than that everyone enjoyed the riding and the challenging terrain. We’ve not been to Broxa and Wykeham for 7 years and quite a lot of tracks had changed in their rideability, we were blessed with a ridiculously warm day for October, no rain and most tracks were riding well.

Highlights for me, whilst out planning were the tracks along the North edge of Broxa, the various bridleways within the forest and the track along the East edge of Wykenham.

Introducing Raincliffe Woods also added some great riding and enough extra distance / height gain to ensure that even the best riders would struggle to clear the course although Andy Windrum did a fantastic effort to get 485.”

Thanks to Doreen at Hackness Village Hall for arranging its use and to Andrea and Liz for administering the sign on / finish, Tim for the map and John Dixon for calculating the league scores, on the fly!

Wykeham & Broxa Forests – Saturday 7th October – Online Entry closes Wednesday 3rd

A 3 hour AFTERNOON event, event centre at Hackney’s Village Hall

The last NYMBO event of the 2023 league is based around Hackness Village, close to Scarborough on the Eastern edge of the North Yorkshire Moors.

Online Entry Here

The forests and surrounding trails around Hackness haven’t been used since 2016 and offer a wide range of riding.

Not 1 but 3 wooded areas are covered by the event, Broxa, Wykenham and Raincliffe woods.

The event utilises as much singletrack as possible so there are some fast (and some less fast) flowing trails with great views, and a few tricky climbs / descents. However once up these climbs both Broxa and Wykeham offer some relatively flat riding.

As of last Saturday (23rd) most of the trails were riding really well, and as the forecast is pretty reasonable I’m hoping that this will be the case on the 7th

Parking : We have use of the Village Hall, officially from 12:30 ish onwards IF you arrive early then it might be sensible on street parking, obviously avoiding blocking the village and annoying the locals.

Registration 12:00 -13:00

Starts 12:30-13:30

Don’t forget there will be prize giving for all our category winners after the event and if you’ve ridden 5 events this season then you qualify for the NYMBO 2023 League Mug!! 🏆

Swaledale Race Report & Pictures

SATURDAY RACE REPORT

It was a pity the weather was so unpleasant on the day but everyone seemed to return to the Dales Bike Centre with smiles on their faces – or were they grimaces. I always enjoy planning courses anywhere and in particular so close to home. It’s a beautiful area with lots of great riding and the views are usually spectacular. It’s always a tough uphill start from the DBC but once you’re on the tops, the tracks go on for miles and the return is usually downhill and downwind. The tracks were a lot drier when I did my final check a fortnight ago so apologies if some of them were a bit wetter and softer than expected.
Unfortunately some of the tracks can be rough so a few riders had punctures and the wet weather made it difficult to repair them. Impressed that Andrew Windrum walked 5 miles back to DBC to repair a tyre then rode back up the Fremington track to continue his ride. Also, well done to David Day who decided to push his bike with a flat tyre and visit a few extra controls on his way back
Congratulations to the category winners especially those who were booked in to ride on Sunday.
Thanks to Arkengarthdale East and Reeth Estates who were happy for us to use some of their private gravel tracks. Thanks also to DBC for their hospitality and Tim for drawing an excellent map.

SUNDAY RACE REPORT

The course stayed south of the river on Sunday but the morning views didn’t look any better than on Saturday. Fortunately, the rain eased off and the wind didn’t get any stronger so I hope you could enjoy the better riding conditions.
All riders (except Andy Conn) realised that they would have to ignore either the SW or SE part of the map but most decided to enjoy a stunning ride up or down Apedale and hopefully the estate track on Bolton Moor.
Again the tracks had softened since my last ride so I’m sorry if they caught anyone out. I must admit I didn’t expect so many riders to use the tough bridleway between 23 and 25 so I wish I’d positioned 23 SW at the shooting hut. (Isn’t hindsight wonderful)!!
Thanks to Grinton and Bolton estates for letting us use their private estate tracks. (Please remember that we have no right to use the track past Greenhaw Hut except on Sundays and never during the breeding season March to July).
Thanks again to the DBC for their hospitality and the cake boxes for the weekend winners. Hopefully we’ll see you at our final event at Wykeham & Broxa Forest on Saturday 7th October.
Congratulations again to the leading riders on the day and here are the full combined scores.
