Swaledale SUNDAY course

Swaledale weekend in 2 weeks – have you entered yet?

Steve Willis has been hard at work on the two 4 hour courses for our Swaledale weekend. You can ride just the Saturday or Sunday if you wish, but as camping for Friday and Saturday night is included in the entry fee, why not make a weekend of it.

The best value option is to enter before the online discount ends on Monday 15th, and make sure to add the extra discount if you’re riding both days – that will make the adult rider price just £30 for 2 events.

registration is 09:30-10:30 and starts 10:00 – 11:00

Day 1 – SATURDAY
You’ll be heading north on Saturday so it’s going to be a tough start and a fast finish. Thanks to the keepers on Barningham and Arkengarthdale East estates for giving us permission to use all of their private tracks. So some new tracks to add to the usual bridleways but please don’t ride them beforehand or they might withdraw their permission!!

Day 2 – SUNDAY
You’ll be heading west on Sunday so thanks to the keepers on Reeth, Grinton and Arkengarthdale West estates for letting us use their private tracks but the same as yesterday. Please stick to the bridleways if you go for a ride beforehand.

Free coffee and cake afterwards from the DBC on both days
Prizes will be presented at 3.30 on Sunday to the weekend winners plus OMM vouchers to the best of those who rode in both events – Wye Valley in May and Swaledale this weekend.

Hope to see you there!

Slingsby results, report and control map

Fifty-seven riders took to the hills and fields around Slingsby and hopefully enjoyed the hastily arranged course that took in the stunning tracks on the Howardian Hills and some of the less used Bridleways to the North.

Full results can be found here
MapRun results including individual tracks here

Thanks must go to Steve and Andrea Foster for bravely going on a bridleway hunt for me once we had the hall booked, Dave Robertson for testing some of the controls and more bridleways out, Steve Willis for buying the excellent savoury food that you all demolished and Tim Brion for using his excellent local knowledge to source the Village Hall keys!

I enjoyed my two rides out testing more of the bridleways once FC had said that they didn’t have time to process our slightly late application for Dalby.  I used some of the tracks from last year’s Terrington event but extended North and East to provide some variety, this was also driven by the temporary closure of the bridleway in the southwest corner for ash die back work.  Hopefully I manage to avoid most of the nettles and brambles. Dave and I thought the bridleway between 3 and 28 should have been compulsory it was so good. Interesting the bridleway from 16 to 22 which was very indistinct was used by at least 2 riders, one the event winner Mr Conn as his attempt to get to control 12 was thwarted by being the wrong side of the hedge, a quick look at the tracks on maprun shows he wasn’t the only one.

Looking at your tracks on maprun is really useful as it helps for planning future events to see what works and what confuses you. If you want some amusement, go and look at the tracks around control 26, The Fosters and I rode this no issue east to west clearly the access from the west wasn’t as clear.

So overall winner and First M50 was Andy Conn with 490 points, Edwyn Oliver-Evans was second and First M21 with 476 points and Nuno Cerqueria was 3rd and first M40 with 452 points.  First Mixed pair was CLAIRE RILEY and Dave Cowgill with 357 points, First M60 was Tim Higgins with 345 points, The battle of the M70’s was a draw with Steve Willis and David Day getting 290 points although the excuses about punctures and saddles falling of makes you realise how competitive they both are. First Lady and First W60 was Angela Brand-Barker First W50 was Jill Ellison, First W70 was Karen Blackburn and first W21 was Ellie Middlemass on her first solo event.

Finally on a more sombre note, Jeff Harris who was a regular planner of the White Rose MTBO, as well as many other events sadly passed away at the end of July, Jeff will be sorely missed, and our thoughts are with his family at this time. The last event he planned was the 2022 White Rose event at Gilling East and we used some of the same tracks this time.

Next event is the Swaledale weekend in September, more details soon.

Don’t forget that if you fancy a trip to Keswick, the next Lakes MBO is on 7th Septembert, entry here

BMBO Championships Saturday Course

BMBO Championships – Sunday Control Map

BMBO Championship Weekend Kirkby Malzeard

72 riders took on the 5 hour challenge of the 1st Day of the 2025 BMBO Score championships , in what can only be described as damp conditions, although the threatened downpours didn’t really occur till the drive home on Sunday.  I had planned a course that I was hoping would be unclearable and Tom Gibbs proved me wrong riding 101km in 4 hours 58 minutes but listening to other riders they had dropped points as they were unsure if they could clear up , Killian even did a long in out for a 5 pointer on the moors that made him 5 points late still he needed the exercise.

Most riders went for clockwise loop and this seemed to give more options at the end as those going anticlockwise dropped the 25 points in Colsterdale thinking it wasn’t worth the 6km deviation.  One of the advantages of MapRun is we can see where you went and the pair who decided to go west out of Colsterdale to control 11 probably realised why we had removed it as a route choice as it took them 45 minutes  of bog trotting as the nice track you start on soon runs out.

Apologies to those who thought private track meant you couldn’t use it rather than we have permission on the day to use it

Winner on the day was Tom Gibbs with 527 points second was Andy Conn with 511 points and Sam Morris was 3rd with 506 points . First E-bike was Sheila Pearce with 478 points and first lady was Claire Riley with 415 points.  Both Under 18s did really well with Oliver Dencher leading with 432 points versus Isaac Pressley with 395 points. Top M60 in 10th was Bob Cherry with 445 points, 1stM70 was Sundays planner David Day with 365 points.

So after Sundays more navigationally challenging  3 hour ride the summary scores gave the following champions:

  • Overall ( and 1st M21)  was Sam Morris with 1014 points who came closest to clearing up
  • 2nd overall and 1st M50 was Andy Conn with 1003 points narrowly beating Tom Gibbs with 1002 points
  • 1st M60 and 12th  Overall was Bob Cherry with 845 points
  • 1st Y18 and 11th Overall  was Isaac Pressley who managed to overturn his Saturday deficit over Oliver Dencher and scored  868 points Isaac still has his glass and non alcoholic beer to collect
  • 1st E Bike and 7th Overall was Sheila Pearce with 935 points
  • 1st Generation pair were Kevin and Mtthew Goodwin with 740 points and 28th Overall
  • 1st Over 50 Lady  and 38th overall ( 3rd Lady overall ) was Angela Brand-Barker with 660 points
  • 1st M40 and 5th Overall was Tom Davies with 959 points
  • 1st M70 and 32nd Overall was Steve Willis who was glad David Day had planned Sunday and didn’t get double points with 690 points
  • 1st and only mix team was Jack Higham and Amelie Wayte who were 48th overall with 561 points
  • 1st Lady  and 1st Under 50 lady was Claire Riley who was 19th Overall with 816 points ( beating her normal partner in crime Dave Cowgill who was 22ndoverall)

Congratulations to all our winners and thank you all for attending . I  still have some tweaking to do to the master spreadsheet so will get this finished over the weekend and publish.

Hopefully you all enjoyed the first national championship with MapRun , there were very few issue and no missing controls.  As we said one of the advantages with maprun is we can see where you all went so if you wonder how Tom went so well on Sunday take a look at his route ( if you look at Sunday you may also were he didn’t go quite so well) The results are all MapRun Results  for Saturday and Here for Sunday. However this has picked up a few illegal route choices and riders have been docked points for this, please make sure you keep to the published bridleways and tracks to ensure we are still able to use the area , there were also some complaints about gates being left open overheard in the campsite , again we should always leave gates in the position we found them .

Sunday results and report

You’ll find the updated Sunday results on the BMBO page here

If you wish to see the unamended results and rider’s tracks you can see those on MapRun here

Here’s David Day’s report for Sunday:

When planning I try to give plenty of route choice options, both between controls & generally over the area. The lack of unanimity of riders’ tracks seems to have confirmed the aim, every control on the map was visited. 18 of the controls were on BWs, pretty well every BW on the competition map had a control on it. I like to use big circles & control numbers, cutting the circles where they obscure detail; I now realise that #14 obscured a private track which 3 riders explored before realising their mistake – apologies for this oversight.

Nobody rode off the map today so another tick for you all.

  • Top scorer with 508 points was M21 Sam Morris who was also the weekend winner;
  • M50s were 2nd & 3rd:Andy Conn & Killian Lomas 483.
  • Watch out in future for Y18 Isaac Pressley on 473.

Leading Ebike was Sheila Pearce 457, 1st W50 was Claire Riley 402 who had ditched usual Mixed partner David Cowgill for the weekend to finish champion lady. Some newbies turned up for the event & some forgot to enter in advance but we squeezed them in, we hope to see some of you at future events.

What made the whole weekend more successful were the efforts taken by Ivy Bank Staycation to make us all welcome & feed what appeared to be the 5000 at times. When I arrived on Friday, boss Sam had just obtained & installed a replacement dishwasher when the original had stopped working& flooded the kitchen; it can be a stressful life running a business but Sam and his assistants Christine &Jenny went above and beyond to make our stay enjoyable, our own dedicated Bike O area was another bonus. All this at a paltry £10 per person per night negotiated beforehand – we do like good value in Yorkshire, you can thank me next time you see me in the bar.

The areas for Saturday and Sunday had different characteristics, we hope the competitors enjoyed both challenges equally.
