Another muddy Bank Holiday in North Yorkshire but plenty of fun for nearly 100 riders. Basic results on the results page and splits on the Ebor site at http://www.eborienteers.org.uk/wp-content/uploads/2012/08/28/index2.html
Wykeham & Broxa – Organiser’s Comments
Thanks to Dave Lloyd for planning another excellent course and Jens for another excellent map. We have used Wykeham regularly in the past so Dave decided to add Broxa and Bickley to the map to give more variety and he definitely succeeded. There was no avoiding the steep drop out of Wykeham and then it was a big choice to make before climbing back up to the finish. It’s a pity it didn’t stay dry for the afternoon but everyone seemed to enjoy their ride despite the mud.
Thanks to all of the helpers as usual but especially the control collectors who volunteered at the last minute – Jake Herbert, Chris Fountain, Louise & Simon Granger.
I enjoyed my ride because it is the first time that I have ever ridden with Barbara – and the rest of the family were all there as well. They all enjoyed it and Matt is even thinking of giving up football.
Congratulations to Kris Smith who only missed out 3 controls – and some riders thought the area was too large before they started. Tim Evans was only 30 points behind to win M40, Mike Nayler tightened his grip on the M50 class and Geoff Moorhouse had his best ride of the season to outscore David Day and Dave Evans by 24 points – and I put him in the wrong class!! Max and Martin Vesty won the Generation class comfortably again and Sheila Pearce was the highest scoring woman. Steve & Andrea Foster used their Alpine training to good effect to win X50 by48 points. John Dixon is adding the points from this event and Malham to the league so I’ll post it as soon as it is available. Only 2 more league events to go, so hope to see you at either or both of them.
There are 3 more events in the next fortnight so please enter online or send me an email.

Plenty of choice for all abilities and Jens has drawn the map so why not enter!! If you don’t want to compete, I would be glad of some help putting out the controls on Friday or Saturday and collecting them in on Sunday!!
Don’t forget to enter online if possible for the Malham and Wykeham events. The MBO at Malham is part of the Malham Show www.malhamdale.com and the Wykeham MBO is part of the White Rose weekend White Rose Final Details
Hope to see you there
With only 7 pre-entries it was never going to be a busy evening but the weather decided to put everyone off. Driving rain and fog greeted the few riders to arrive so that David Day was the only one to actually start. Thanks to those brave fools who made it to the car park. DD shamed me into setting off but after 5 minutes I decided that I’d had enough and went back to the welcoming Hambleton Inn for my meal and well earned pint. Thanks to John Dixon for planning the course and we will use it on a bright sunny November morning instead.
The numbers at this summer’s series of events have been very disappointing so it is unlikely that they will be repeated next year. Instead, I will arrange a monthly ride from different pubs in North Yorkshire where old maps will be available for those who want to have a go. Please let me know what you think.
The final evening event of the summer is this Wednesday (15th) at the Hambleton Inn at the top of Sutton Bank. John Dixon has planned an excellent course and the countryside is superb. The tracks have dried up over the last month so hope you can make it for a pleasant ride followed by a drink and bar meal. Online entries close this evening but you can still enter by email tomorrow. Only 7 pre-entries so far but the event is definitely still on. Please pre-enter if you intend to ride so that I print enough maps. Hope to see you there.

Silton & Boltby – Organiser’s Comments
I was looking forward to riding in the forests again after two events on the moors but the heavy rain this year ensured that we had a mudbath to contend with and the best tracks were on the moors. However, Michael had planned an excellent course with a good variety of tracks and plenty of route choice. Many of you, like me, tried the first 2 tracks in Silton Forest and decided to stick to forest roads for the rest of the ride. Congratulations to Andy Conn on another excellent score closely followed by Duncan Archer. Obviously Fontainbleu was perfect training forNorth Yorkshire. Mike Nayler was back on form to win M50 as was John Dixon in M60. Sue Booth won the Ladies section and Christine & Ralph just outscored Steve & Andrea in the mixed. Richard and James Martin took advantage of the Vesty’s absence to win the Generation category and Ed took it easy with a big race next weekend to win M18.
John Dixon is calculating the league points and the updated positions will be posted soon.
Thanks to all of the helpers, especially the control collectors who didn’t get too wet. Thanks also to Jens Strain for another excellent map. There were a few problems and, as this was Michael’s first attempt at planning, I should have given him more guidance. Some of the controls were more difficult to find than usual and some of the descriptions were confusing. Controls 37, 46 and 59 caused problems for a few riders so I have decided to award the points to anyone who couldn’t find them. Please let me know if you were late because you spent time looking for them and I will adjust your time accordingly. As a general principle at NYMBO and NEMBOS events, if you are certain that you are in the right place and can’t find the control, don’t waste time looking for it. Just make a note of your time and let us know when you finish. We aren’t trying to hide the controls but we occasionally get it wrong and don’t want to spoil your ride. Unfortunately #36 was destroyed overnight and I have added 10 points to everyone who added their names to the list. Please let me know if I missed you out.

Planner’s Comments
I was pleased when Steve asked me to plan this event, having ridden there quite often I thought I knew the forest quite well, but during the planning I discovered I did not know it as well as I thought. This was the first event I have planned, judging by the recent weather I was quite surprised but pleased by the number of riders that turned out.
I tried to do an even spread of check points between the two main forest areas and I think it worked well. When I was putting out the checkpoints on Friday I realised just how wet and hard going it would for the riders.
All the returning riders commented rather surprisingly about the amount of mud about, living in England isn’t that summer!
I would like to thank Steve and Jens for all the help they gave me, also a thank you to all the riders who helped collect the checkpoints in, great team effort .
As I have taken part in Trailquests for some time this added another dimension for me so if you have a favourite area give it a go.
Mick Brough

PS Don’t forget that all events (3 hours of longer) that use Sportident are included in the BMBO National Rankings with your best 10 scores to count
PPS I am still planning the Polaris is in the Yorkshire Dales on Saturday/Sunday 22nd/23rd September and there will be 5 options – 7&5 hours with overnight camp, 5&4 hours without overnight camp, 4 hours on Saturday or 3 hours on Sunday, 40/20k fixed routes on Saturday and 30/15k fixed routes on Sunday. Plenty of choice for all abilities so why not enter?
Michael Brough has planned an excellent course and will be putting out the controls tomorrow. The main tracks and bridleways are all ok to ride but route choice will be crucial. 90 riders have pre-entered and there are 30 spare maps for entry on the day so hope to see you there. The event centre is at Stay Farm near Kepwick where there is a lot of hard-standing but some late arrivals may have to park on the edge of the wet fields. Registration opens at 11.30 and you can start between 12 and 1pm. I hope the weather’s like this photo on the Cleveland Way.
Congratulations to 3 of our regular riders who won the Five Day event at Fontainbleu Forest this week. Ed Oliver Evans in M18 and Andrew Windrum deadheating with Andy Conn in M40 after over 5 hours riding and over 20 minutes ahead of the third rider. Hopefully, they will be back in time to ride at Silton and Boltby this Saturday. Another forest but slightly different riding!
A pleasant evening for a change and the Vesty’s win again on home territory
Neil Reed had planned an excellent course which encouraged us to use a mixture of roads and bridleways in this beautiful area less than 10 miles from Leeds city centre. I decided to stay on the bridleways around Harewood and Eccup and really appreciated the views across Wharfedale in the evening sunshine. Edwin decided to visit all of the 30 point controls and did it so well that he won overall ahead of local rider Tim Patterson, his Dad and the Generation pair of Adrian & Nathan Parker. The Sun Inn provided an excellent event centre and managed to serve our meals as soon as we finished despite the extra custom that the England game brought in. We could then enjoy the second half.
There were 33 riders which was a pleasant surprise as I only had 7 online and 10 email entries by the closing date on Sunday evening. I was glad I took my computer and printer for the extra 16 maps that were needed!!
Frank Appleton is recovering from knee surgery and planning the next evening event on Wednesday 11th July from the Blue Bell at Kirby Hill near Boroughbridge – so a chance to ride around the area where I lived for 25 years!! Hopefully we will see you there or at the next league event at Silton & Boltby Forests near Thirsk on July 14th
