The first event of Winter Series is in Ripon on Saturday November 12th.

NYMBO Winter 2021-22 v2

Registration: 0915 – 1015
Starts: 0930 – 1030

Venue: South Lodge pub, Harrogate Road, Ripon. HG4 1ST. The pub has a large car park, if it is full please park on Whitcliffe Lane opposite the pub. Toilets are available in the pub on arrival, please order food from the menu before riding.

The competition area consists of complex minor roads with some good bridleways; the busy A61 bisects the area, most of it is OOB but the safest places to cross will be identified on the map.

If using a smartphone don’t forget to load the course onto the phone at home; if using a smartwatch or Garmin you need to synchronise with satellites before approaching the start. The finish is at the E side of the car park, away from Harrogate Road in case you pass the pub before you finish.

There are 5 events planned for our winter league, and the first one is in Ripon on Saturday 13th November. Online entry open now.

There will be five events, as follows:

• 13th November – South Lodge, nr Ripon
• 11th December – Harrogate
• 22nd January – Thornton Watlass
• February – TBC Knaresborough or York
• 12 March – Cullingworth nr Keighley

A few things to note about the winter series:

• All events will be online entry only with no entry on the day. This has worked really well over the past year, so we will keep this in place. It really helps to have contact details for everyone in case of late changes or if the venue needs to know who attended.
• Online entry deadline is midnight Thursday to guarantee a map. We’ve extended this by an extra day as there’s no entry on the day.
• No specific start times – we did this last winter as a result of pandemic rules, but we won’t do that this winter. Start time is anytime between 0930 – 1030.
• All events will use MapRun – this has worked reasonably well over the summer and offer more versatility for winter events rather than the treasure hunt format (although it is a little sad to see that go aftre all these years). Please get in touch if that presents a problem and we’ll try to help (We will have a spare phone available). Some events may also have treasure hunt clues as well

MapRun – we’ve created a new MapRun FAQ page – this consolidates all the information from over the summer and hopefully answers all the key opints. If something is missing, or isn’t clear, please leave a comment on the page.

Thanks to Conrad and Jill for organising a great course – here’s their report:

Great to see everyone at Kildale for the final event of the Spring/Summer NYMBO league..  Luckily, the rain held off until after the event but the wind was brutal at times and a number of competitors took a battering over Percy Rigg on the return leg.

Thank you for your kind comments and for embracing MapRun.  A big thanks to Tim for preparing the map and holding our hands with MapRun.  Thanks also to Kildale Village Hall and the landlords/agents covering Kildale, Gisborough and Baysdale Estates.

I did a clear up trial a couple of weeks ago and was not reckoning on Ian N almost clearing up (Well Done).  Well done to all category winners.  A final thanks to all riders who did the Little Kildale/Baysdale loop, having to encounter a ford – the bridge was there last week !

Hope to see you all at the winter series and more MapRunning without having to remember telegraph pole numbers or remove freezing hands from gloves to scribble down phone box numbers.

The deadline for getting you entry in for this Saturday’s event has been extended to midnight Thursday to give everyone a final chance to enter. All other details are in the previous post.

Our final league event for 2021 is next Saturday October 2nd – it’s a 3 hour event, based at Kildale Village Hall. Conrad and Jill Ellison have planned a fantastic course to finish the season.

Online entry closes midnight Thursday 30th September

This event will use MapRun (and not SI controls), so if you’ve not used that before you can check out the details in the previous posts. As always, any issues, please get in touch.

There will be spot prizes too on 5 controls for the first rider to reach that point.

Registration is 09.00-10.15 and start times between 09.30 and 10.30

The updated league after 5 events can be found here – your 3 best events of 6 will count for the final league position.(You may need to refresh the page by pressing F5 is a previous version is cached)

As it’s the final event, league prizes will be awarded at the end of the day when the results are in, so please try to stay around for that if you can!

Winter league for November to March should be available soon – but we could really do with some more planners – please talk to Tim on Saturday if you might be interested or drop him a message.

Thanks to Steve Willis for planning yesterday’s event, here’s his report and the control map:

Thanks to the Dales Bike Centre for hosting our event (and the coffee & cake), Tim Evans for his hard work with the map as well as the 4 gamekeepers for raising no objections to the event taking place and allowing us to use a number of their private estate tracks.

Using Maprun instead of SportIdent worked well for most riders and hopefully it will improve in the near future as it saves so much time putting out and collecting the controls as well as removing the problem of controls going missing. The main problem is not being able to load an OS map on the Maprun App so there were slight (ie 50m) differences in the locations of 4 controls. Hopefully it didn’t spoil anyone’s ride.

I thoroughly enjoyed checking all of the control sites over the previous 2 months as it’s a cracking area with stunning views and great trails. It was reassuring to see that the leading 4 riders all went to different first controls – and surprising that winner’s first control was at the top of Fremington Edge!! Most riders also visited most of the controls on the excellent Swale Trail which, despite the gates, is so enjoyable as it is fairly flat.

Hopefully everyone enjoyed their ride today. Here are the provisional results (there maybe a couple of adjustments for the couple of riders who had their results included manually). Steve’s report and final results to follow.

Swaledale Results (1st)

If you’re coming to the Swaledale event, here are some extra bits of information. You should have had this by email, but just in case you haven’t received it it’s replicated here.

Thanks for entering Sunday’s four hour MBO event at the Dales Bike Centre in Fremington. Here are a few extra bits of information on MapRun.

In addition to Steve’s Spot Prizes there’s free coffee and cake for all finishers.

MAPRUN INFO

As you know we are using Maprun for this event so please can you ensure you download the app ( Maprun 6 for phones or MaprunG for Garmin users) older versions will get the points wrong.

BEFORE YOU TRAVEL – Please can you also ensure you download the map file as 4G can be a bit iffy depending on network and whilst we will have the Dales Bike Centre Wifi it will be easier if you have done this .

This can be downloaded using QR code at the bottom or if you click on select event then UK then North Yorkshire then NYMBO then click on Swaledale2021 it will download the event.

ON THE DAY – if you click on go to start you will be asked for a PIN code that Steve will give you.

This will bring up the course on the screen with a background map from OpenOrienteering which is georeferenced,  The controls are placed in google earth not on this map as it isn’t spot on as the extract below shows. The control is on the path not in the river.  We have left the track visible option on so if you think you are at the control and it hasn’t bleeped look at your phone to see if it thinks you are anywhere near and go towards the control if possible, if your phone GPS and the ground think differently we can adjust using the HITMO function after you have finished this increases the search radius and often picks up the odd stray control.

A quick word about the start and finish below is the map and google earth extracts . For the start Steve will give you the map you will enter the PIN get yourselves set up then leave the DBC and it should Ping as you leave or get to the exit, please do not abuse this by planning your route before you approach the start ,

The finish has been kept away from the road so that if any of you cycle past to get that last control you shouldn’t trigger the finish if you do trigger the finish as you pass let us know and we will credit the extra controls and make a judgement on how late you would have been but hopefully this should not happen, and it won’t trigger if you go one way , change your mind and go back as you have to visit a control first .

Please upload your results before you leave so we can see who has won
