Planner’s comments from Conrad & Jill:
As ever, Jill and I enjoyed planning an event in the north of the NYMBO region. The last time we ran an event in the area we also used the moor to the east of Lordstones (Barker’s Cragg) but that event was clearly a 4 hour course given the scores. This time we reduced the area to make sure that a clear-up was potentially on the cards.
Congratulations to Graham for a fantastic score of 508, only missing 2 controls and getting up to 48 on Cold Moor too. Congratulations to all category winners. Thank you to Steve and Jens who provided fantastic support as they always do. Also a big thanks to the control collectors who helped.
Organiser’s comments from Steve:
Thanks to Conrad & Jill for another excellent course on the northern edge of the North York Moors. The weather didn’t look promising as we arrived but none of us got too wet, it was mild and fairly calm so everyone seemed to enjoy their ride. Unfortunately, one control went missing so that will cost us £96 and make you wonder what use it is to anyone. Also, #35 was on the wrong fence junction so please let me know if you need the points for either of these controls. We also had a problem with FC when, out of courtesy, Conrad sent the draft course as they wanted to charge the full permit fee for using the public bridleways through their forests. I refused to pay and asked Conrad to move the controls off their land but leave the public bridleways as legal corridors through the forests. I have no problem paying to use private tracks as we will be next month.
Despite these problems, I thoroughly enjoyed the event and thanks as ever to Jens for another excellent map; Conrad & Jill for putting out all of the controls; Geoff Moorhouse, Sheila Pearce & John Dixon for their help on the day as well as the control collectors.
Congratulations to Graham Tibbott for only missing out 2 controls for an excellent score of 508; Karen Clark riding again and outscoring the other ladies with 324 points and the Brand-Barkers winning the mixed with 370 points.

I thoroughly enjoyed my ride and having already seen the map, I decided to avoid the tough bridleway over Cold Moor and use the road to get to the edge of the hills so that I could ride the fantastic singletrack across the front of Cringle Moor. I then got a bit lost in the woods near Lordstones as usual before nearly not making it round the bend on the road below Carlton Bank. Quicker riding (despite my cleat and shoe separating) on the quiet lanes and good bridleways below the scarp slope before the big decision at Bank Foot and went for the moorland option. Great riding once I got up there but the views have been better before descending through the muddy woods to Seave Green and back to the hall.
The next event will be the 4 hour event at Malham on Saturday, 26th August which is being planned by Tim Evans & Simon Coiley this year. It’s an early start as usual and slightly more expensive but you get free entry into Malham Show.
Two days later it’s the White Rose MBO event at Helmsley on Bank Holiday Monday where Michael Brough has already planned an excellent course. The entry fee is £2 more than usual as we have to pay both Duncombe Estate and FC for access to their private woods. But you have free camping, portaloos (!!), burger van and you can orienteer on Sunday.
Don’t forget that this is my 5th last event and I will still be retiring as an organiser at the end of the season so the Nidderdale event will be my last. I would still like to hear from someone who is interested in taking on the coordinators’s role or a few people who would like to manage the events between them. I will still plan an event every year and ride whenever we’re not on holiday, seeing the family or playing golf!!2 riders have already offered to organise events this winter but we need someone to take over ……please!!

Planner’s Report
Gill Garth Farm played host to this years 5hr NYMBO event. So how was it? Maybe it is best described as wet. Well, it actually rained non-stop from start to finish, puddles became lakes, streams soon became rivers, water levels rising and floods everywhere – even the parked cars where looking in jeopardy at one point. Its fair to say that the riders were not to keen to start out, even the cow-shed that played host to the event was just too luring and comfortable… but slowly as the clock nudged 10 then one-by-one the riders started, hoping the rain would abate, but it didn’t.
So to the course, I was invited to use Gill Garth Farm, by the Wilson family who farm there, they are the best people around and allow me to do a Fell Race from there as well as the BMBO event and of course the 3 Peaks CX that comes through it. So We owe a really big thanks to them. The northerly location of the base allowed me to plan a course around the upper reaches of Ribblesdale and on to some of the less frequented and more mountainous trails. The route effectively circumnavigated Ingleborough, with a few ‘control clusters’ scattered about the area. Some favourites of the riders, such as the Wharfe single tracks where used, with reports of the slate clapper bridge near CP45 being submerged… My apologies for CP39, the ‘cattle-grid’ location was out by about 100m on the map and also a missing finger post at CP45 meant that a more hidden stone gate post had to be used.
I like to plan a course that is ideally just achievable by the ‘top-bombers’, so it was nice to see that Graham Tibbot got a score of 509 today, on a good day he would have done it I’m sure – so kudos to Graham. However Graham’s kudos has been revoked as he had a whole team of people searching the field getting drenched looking for his missing car key, that later mysteriously reappeared in the middle of his van… It was pleasing to see a good turnout of juniors as well – they loved riding the puddles and the rivers and it made me wonder at what age is it that you consciously avoid a puddle at all cost??? – kids love ’em, I hate the things personally.
Big well done to every who turned up and rode (I won’t mention his name but some chap came from the Loughborough region forgot his bike shoes – anything to avoid a ride in a bit of Yorkshire rain!). Considering the weather most people used most of the 5hrs and got some pretty respectable scores across all the classes, but there were one or two ‘late backs’ that cost them ‘a bit’, but hey never mind!

Updated results hereJeff Harris planned an excellent course with plenty of route choice and the dry weather meant that the fitter riders were going to have to cover the whole of this beautiful area and no-one would have to spend much time cleaning their bikes afterwards. The tracks were the driest that I can remember so that even the ploughed field north of Terrington was rideable.
Thanks as ever to Jens for another excellent map; Jeff for putting out all of the controls; Geoff Moorhouse, Alistair Copeland; Michael Brough for their help on the day as well as the control collectors (see below). Congratulations to Edwyn Oliver-Evans (M21) for winning again and visiting all of the controls with 8 minutes to spare. Andy Conn (M50) did the same but was 42 seconds late so only 524 points this month. You can follow all of their routes using the splits file and course map. I made a mistake with the SI programme as I copied the Cropton file where I had to change the values of 47 and 57 around. Unfortunately, I forgot to change them back again which didn’t matter if you visited both controls. I’ve amended the results and posted the correct version on the web pages. Please let me know if there are any other errors. Apologies also to 2 riders who tried to find the start at Gilling East. I changed the event centre a few months ago and thought I had updated the web pages. Sorry you didn’t see that but glad that you made it to Brandsby in time. I thoroughly enjoyed my ride as usual on my newly serviced bike and skinny tyres. (Thanks John). Having already seen the map, I had already decided to get the climb over first so headed for Gilling Woods. I reached Hovingham in under an hour so decided to visit all of the controls in the woods before heading back through Terrington and Scackleton. It was very obvious why this area has been designated an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.
Don’t forget that I will still be retiring as an organiser at the end of the season so the Nidderdale event will be my last. Planner’s comments From the comments I received at the finish everyone enjoyed the event, I really enjoyed planning the event, did anyone have time to admire the views from one of the ridges in the area and the Brandsby Village Hall made a great event centre, although the parking was a bit tight at the end. There was plenty of option for riders to plan a route back to the start, you just had to decide at which point to cut back through the middle of the area or stay on the outside of the area, for anyone going for all the controls the main decision was when to pick the controls in the centre of the area, congratulation to Edwyn who managed to clear all the controls with over 8 mins to spare, I knew the area was fast and with ground being so dry there was every chance that someone would clear the area in under 3 hours. Many thanks to Ray, Andy, Andrew, Adrian, Tim, Edwyn and John, for your help collecting in the controls at the end after their rides.
