Marathon Comments   

It was great to see 68 riders setting off in the sunshine on Sunday morning. Everyone seemed to enjoy their rides especially those who completed the 100k route. The tracks were much drier than they have been all year but the southerly wind was tough to ride against across the moors.

Thanks to Richard Laley at High Rigg who allowed us to park for free andJens Strain for drawing an excellent map. Unfortunately, FC decided to charge the normal fee which works out at £2 per rider and Big Bear Bikes didn’t provide any sponsorship so the cost of the engraved glasses had to come out of the entry fee. However we will be able to donate £250 to the Scarborough & Ryedale Mountain Rescue Team.

Thanks also to everyone who helped on the day. My wife, Barbara, who looked after registration, John Dixon on the car park and the checkpoint marshals – Jens & Eileen Strain, Mike Nayler & Carol Donnelly and Frank & Sandra Appleton – plus Michael Brough who put out Controls 5,6 & 7.  

Hopefully we will repeat the event next September but possibly in the other direction so that you don’t have to finish with the 2 toughest climbs of the day. Please let me know if you want to see any other changes. We failed to provide the GPS co-ordinates on the web page for you to download so please let me know if you can sort them out for next year. If you know how we can advertise the event more widely please let me know. It would be great to see 100 riders doing 100 kilometres next year.

Planners Comments

Having planned and competed in these woods for over 40 years it is sometimes difficult to create a different feel to the event. Splitting the start from the finish was the first step; we then wanted to create decisions for competitors as often as possible, whilst allowing good fast riding!

We are very impressed with the high scores and with both Ian and Andy clearing all the controls inside 4 hours. Did anyone check for power assistance? Knowing how long it took to hang them all makes it even more awesome.

We were delighted to see so many puzzled faces as you got your maps. It certainly hit one of our targets of making you think. Judging by the comments at the finish it seems we succeeded! The hot, dry weather certainly helped but well done to all competitors – collecting controls from the top of Langdale was a pleasure on such a glorious evening, not a single piece of litter anywhere, except an adder skin which nearly caused an accident climbing up from Thompson’s Rigg!

NYMBO events are put on by a small team, lead magnificently by Steve Willis; A VERY BIG thank you to everyone who helped, but especially to the control collectors, Steve Watson, Steve Willis, Frank and Sandra Appleton in their 4×4, Matt and Harry Glaves, all of who, at the end of a long hot day, made it happen. How old to be a collector? 4 years apparently – Harry collected 34, 35 and 39, on the tagalong with his Dad Matt after doing 1.5 hours, without an ice cream, during the event! Hopefully you enjoyed today; to ensure we continue to provide this quality of event we need more people to be involved in putting something back through helping. Control collecting is an easy way, but after a 4 hour event seems daunting, however when there are lots doing it, it is relatively painless and you see the area in a different light! Not long after 6pm I collected my final control, number 60, and was treated to amazing sunlight over LangdaleForest and Thompson Rigg, and only saw one family group in over two hours of riding. Only problem – no camera!

Finally, a big thank you to our respective spouses – Sue and Richard – for their support and tolerance!

Organiser’s Comments

Thanks to Steve & Karen for planning another excellent course, Jens for another excellent map and the helpers as ever for making the event run smoothly. High Rigg makes an excellent event centre and moving the start 3.5k east made the focus of the event different – and Langdale a lot closer. These are 2 great forests for mountain bike orienteering but there are fewer singletracks than in the past due to the purpose built tracks. Congratulations to Andy and Ian who just managed to clear all of the controls – but with only 5 minutes to spare which is about perfect for the rest of us!! Congratulations to all of the category winners but especially Andy Conn, Michael Nayler, Martin & Max Vesty and Steve & Andrea Foster who have been consistent enough to win their categories for the season with one event to go. 

The final event of the season will start at Dacre Village Hall in Nidderdale on Saturday 13^th October. I am sure that David Day has planned another challenging course and hopefully there will be enough dry weather in the next 4 weeks to keep the tracks in good condition.

The Event Centre is at the village hall where refreshments will be on sale all day but car parking is in the sports field which is 400m away. The prizegiving will take place promptly at 3.30 so I hope you can stay to collect your prizes and/or applaud the winners. The prizes have been kindly donated by Muddybums and Yorkshire Dales Brewery

You can make it a weekend of mountain biking with the MBO Middle Distance event at Chopwell Woods on Sunday. Full details on the BMBO web site.

There will be 4 winter MBO events starting in November at Sutton Bank. Full details will be published by the end of the month. Hope to see you at another event soon

PS You can still enter the Polaris in the Yorkshire Dales on Saturday/Sunday 22^nd/23^rd September and there will be 5 options – 7&5 hours with overnight camp, 5&4 hours without overnight camp, 4 hours on Saturday or 3 hours on Sunday, 45/30k fixed routes on Saturday and 30/20k fixed routes on Sunday. Plenty of choice for all abilities and Jens has drawn the map so why not enter!! You can now enter the shorter courses online at www.bmbo.org.uk but you have to enter the 2 longer courses online at http://www.polarischallenge.com/event-entry.html. 150 entries so far

I have now got plenty of help for Friday and Saturday but still space for 2 more collectors on Sunday. One free ride for one day’s help!!

Online entries have now closed with 70 riders for the Dalby Forest MBO event on Saturday and 60 riders on the Marathon on Sunday. You can still reserve a map by leaving a reply below by Friday morning or just turn up on the day as there will be 20 spare maps each day. Don’t forget to print the event fliers to get reduced or free entry into Dalby Forest. The long range weather forecast looks promising so hopefully the tracks will stay dry over the weekend.

38 online entries and 11 email entries from non-BMBO members so online entries will stay open until Wednesday. Only 11 commemmorative engraved glasses left. There will be maps available for entry on the day on Sunday.

There will only be water and biscuits at 4 checkpoints as we have only got 4 marshals so bring plenty of provisions with you. More volunteer marshals would be very welcome.

We will be using SportIdent controls so please bring your dibber if you have one. If not, you will be able to hire one free of charge on Sunday.

Wykeham & Broxa – Organiser’s Comments

Thanks to Dave Lloyd for planning another excellent course and Jens for another excellent map. We have used Wykeham regularly in the past so Dave decided to add Broxa and Bickley to the map to give more variety and he definitely succeeded. There was no avoiding the steep drop out of Wykeham and then it was a big choice to make before climbing back up to the finish. It’s a pity it didn’t stay dry for the afternoon but everyone seemed to enjoy their ride despite the mud.

Thanks to all of the helpers as usual but especially the control collectors who volunteered at the last minute – Jake Herbert, Chris Fountain, Louise & Simon Granger.

I enjoyed my ride because it is the first time that I have ever ridden with Barbara – and the rest of the family were all there as well. They all enjoyed it and Matt is even thinking of giving up football.

Congratulations to Kris Smith who only missed out 3 controls – and some riders thought the area was too large before they started. Tim Evans was only 30 points behind to win M40, Mike Nayler tightened his grip on the M50 class and Geoff Moorhouse had his best ride of the season to outscore David Day and Dave Evans by 24 points – and I put him in the wrong class!! Max and Martin Vesty won the Generation class comfortably again and Sheila Pearce was the highest scoring woman. Steve & Andrea Foster used their Alpine training to good effect to win X50 by48 points. John Dixon is adding the points from this event and Malham to the league so I’ll post it as soon as it is available. Only 2 more league events to go, so hope to see you at either or both of them.

Hambleton Results

With only 7 pre-entries it was never going to be a busy evening but the weather decided to put everyone off. Driving rain and fog greeted the few riders to arrive so that David Day was the only one to actually start. Thanks to those brave fools who made it to the car park. DD shamed me into setting off but after 5 minutes I decided that I’d had enough and went back to the welcoming Hambleton Inn for my meal and well earned pint. Thanks to John Dixon for planning the course and we will use it on a bright sunny November morning instead.
The numbers at this summer’s series of events have been very disappointing so it is unlikely that they will be repeated next year. Instead, I will arrange a monthly ride from different pubs in North Yorkshire where old maps will be available for those who want to have a go. Please let me know what you think.
