White Rose Gilling East Race Report **updated with results**

Results: Gilling result

Thanks to Jeff Harris for an excellent Bank Holiday course. Here’s his report:

I hope everyone enjoyed their ride around the Gilling area, judging by the comments at the finish that seemed to be the case, thankfully the rain held off following the drizzle during registration.

The addition of the two new blocks of woodland, although small, were worth it I thought and the tracks in them were really good, pity we couldn’t get the third new area East of Pry Rigg, maybe another time.

I tried to provide plenty of route choice with no obvious routes around the controls to keep you thinking with plenty of decision points, hopefully you’ll agree I achieved that.

The addition of the permissive route through Ampleforth Abbey Estate via #6 provided a fast route back to Gilling Woods which I know a number of rides chose in preference to the route via #16 and Yearsley Moor Bank; thanks to Ampleforth Abbey and Steve Mosey (Ian Mosey) for permission to use this route.

Thanks to Tim for the map and his sage advise regarding the use of Maprun, thanks also to Dave for manning the start until I’d finished on registration, finally thank to everyone taking part and for your positive comments at the finish.

Take care all the best,

Jeff

Online entry closes midnight Thursday 25th August
20% discount for entries before midnight Wednesday

Registration – 1130 – 1245
Starts 1200 – 1300

The event is using MapRun (FAQ’s here) – please download the course from Friday onwards before you set off to the event.

We’ve used most of the tracks/bridleways in this area for previous events, however we’ve got access to a couple of small areas of woodland which we’ve never used before and they both have some good tracks in them.

As you would expect given the recent hot weather the tracks are very dry, some at the edges of field are quite lumpy where the hoof marks have dried hard, not to many cut hedges though, the weather forecast is looking good and should remain dry.

Parking: Location of parking field is the same field for the foot O use on Saturday and Sunday (note parking is in a different location for foot sprint O on Monday) further info on Eborienteers website – White Rose Weekend – Eborienteers Orienteering

The assembly area and campsite has had to be changed (21/07) and is now south of Gilling East village, 20 miles north of York. Turn Left at the second Yearsley turn from the B1363, coming from the south. Turn right, signposted Yearsley, coming from North. Nearest post code YO62 4HY, or https://what3words.com/throwaway.solicitor.fishery or OS grid ref SE 598747.

The campsite, assembly, and day parking have one main entrance from the public road. There will be no exit from here. There is a separate exit. When driving into the Assembly fields the campsite is in one field to the left, with assembly and day parking in another to the right, please follow directions. The exit is through the day parking field, adjacent to the farm.

Malham Show MBO Saturday 27th August – Course map now available – online entry closes Thursday 25th

**Updates**

  • Parking and registration for the Malham event will be as previous years at the North end of the show field just before the village and National Park centre.
  • Park if possible in the field up the short lane ( left off the green just before National Park car park ) look for ‘nymbo’ sign.
  • Please allow plenty of time if travelling to Malham from the south as the road can become very busy and slow with show traffic.

NYMBO Riders get entry to the show field and the show afterwards included in the entry price.

  • The start will be by the road into Malham opposite the Methodist Chapel / tearooms.
  • Finish will be on the green by the National Park centre.
  • As you can imagine the tracks are really dry and fast which hopefuuly shouldn’t change with the present forecast.

Look forward to seeing you there!
Simon
