10th December – Richmond

Reserve a map here and pay with cash on the day on by bank transfer (BMBO online entry isn’t accepting payments at the moment). You can check your entry has been added by loooking at the entry list here

Great riding on bridleways both sides of the River Swale through pleasant countryside, army ranges and an old racecourse as well as some urban cycle paths. Lombard’s Wynd might prove a challenge if you leave it for your final climb!

The event will use MapRun so please download the map beforehand. (On MapRun select: UK-North Yorkshire-NYMBO-Winter2022–NYMBO Richmond – more details next week)

Collect your descriptions and pre-order any food in the club house. The Start is at the top of Gower Road so please take care riding across the 3rd fairway. Don’t open ‘Go to Start’ on MapRun until you get there as you have to go through the Finish which is on the edge of the course.

Please use the marked cycle paths around the Garrison (although they are not compulsory) but give way to all walkers as well as cars when you go back onto the roads.
After you have finished, please give way to any golfers when you ride back to the car park.

More event details to follow next week, including some photos to help to locate the golf club!

East Rounton Event Report & Control map

Roots Orienteering Event 19th November 2022

It was good to see so many, about 45, turn out for the first of the winter events. Riders had come from far and wide which bodes well for the winter series.

MapRun results here

Final consolidated results table here: Roots results final

The weather had faired up slightly towards the weekend but some of the bridleways were still rather challenging. However, there was sufficient firmer surfaces and tarmac to give everyone a good choice of routes. The controls were distributed so that everyone could obtain a sizeable score and top riders had to go the extra mile (km?) to make the difference. The results show how close the spread was.

This was our second visit to Roots and they were good hosts. Rain set in towards the end of the
event and the café was well supported by many of the riders.

There was a hiccup with parking which might need considering for future events. Despite knowing how many riders were expected this didn’t translate into how much parking space was needed. We need to be more proactive in managing parking and, perhaps in light of the economic situation, even consider promoting car sharing somehow.
One minor technical map run item. At the BMBO AGM there were complaints that you could just ride with maprun and not do any fine navigation . The more astute of you noticed that control 20 wasn’t exactly at the road junction but on the bridleway junction on the other side of the road slightly south, the control descriptions also made this clear. If the app doesn’t register always check the map and the control description . Nuno might also suggest you turn off other notifications after his early turn round at Gilling .

Congratulations to the category winners

Martin Edwards was overall lead with a score of 475

Well done to everyone, see you in December?

MapRun survey – lots of positive comments and constructive feedback

Thanks to everyone who took the time to complete our recent survey on your MapRun experience.  88.7% of you felt that the MapRun experience was ‘great’ or ‘good’ – that’s really encouraging and all of the feedback will help us improve for those who didn’t have that experience.

There were mainly positive responses to Installing MapRun (85.4%) and downloading the course (90.8%) – and so our main focus from the feedback is the use of MapRun during the event.

MapRun Events issues (nb – omits “other” responses for clarity”

Although 52% had no issues, two areas stand out that we can do something about.

Firstly – MapRun going to sleep – we have found that the settings on Android phones can be changed to prevent this from happening, so we’ll update our instructions to help with that

Secondly – not hearing the checkpoint – we’ll improve our instructions on how to change the MapRun settings for this. We will also look at some simple ways to enable people to test their phone so you’re less reliant on the being out on the course and finding it’s not working.

results issues

Results, and particularly the application of penalties is something for us to look at, although incorporating that into MapRun itself would be part of our feedback to the MapRun developers. We’ve got a range of suggestions for MapRun which we will collate.

There was some really helpful feedback on the use of Garmin Watches – particularly from those riders who don’t have a smartphone and use a tablet at home to upload the results. This is something we’ll make clearer as an option. There’s still a bit more work to do to sort out the other feedback and agree some actions, so there will be an update on that when it’s done.

Don’t forget – next event is on November 19th – online entry here

NYMBO Winter Dates, Summer League Roundup and League Positions

We concluded the summer 2022 league with, in my view, a cracking 3 hour event from Helwith Bridge, the area is usually a 5 hour event but the turn out and the complex navigation required seem to please all. Final results here.

John Dixon has sorted out the final league positions for this summer which you will find here. We’ve not been quite as good at publishing this after each event this year, and that’s something we aim to sort out for 2023.

Thanks to all our planners this year – without them we would have no events. Whilst MapRun has simplified preparation before and after the event, the planners have ridden all the tracks leading up to the event, completed the risk assessment and made sure we have a good event centre. This year two events used Forestry commission tracks but the cost of this is astronomical (roughly £200 at each event) , we are hoping that renegotiation will allow us to use more forest tracks for a reasonable fee next year.

The move from clues for the winter events and SI controls for summer events to MapRun has gone better than I expected. Thank you for all your survey feedback, we will put some of these to the app developer (e.g. labelling as a cycle event for strava uploads). Dave, our webmaster who does a sterling job managing the website and sending out the e-mails, will analyse the responses over the next few weeks and we will share them with you.

Numbers have still not recovered to pre pandemic levels and if you have any ideas of how we can encourage riders to have a go please contact myself, Steve or Dave at one of the winter events. 3 hour events still seem the most popular and next year we will look to have most 3 hours but have a 4 hour in Swaledale and probably Malham. We think 3 hours at Malham would just be too limited but Simon may look into it.

I hope you have enjoyed the 2022 Summer season as much as I have and look forward to seeing you all over winter and again next summer.  If you fancy having a go at planning please drop me an e-mail or collar me at an event we are looking for 8 events again one per month and two over the august bank holiday. Andrea Foster has agreed to write a simplified set of instructions which should be ready for Summer , one of the advantages of maprun is you only have to find a feature on the map rather than a feature and something to attach the control to ( or clues in winter) which give us much more flexibility and make the control descriptions much easier.
