Cleveland Hills Planners Comments – Jill and Conrad Ellison
A big thank you for everyone who supported us yesterday – Steve W, John D and the gallant tribe of control collectors – Richard and James M, Christine and Ralph D, Ray M, John R, Simon C, Carl V and Neil R. And to Tim E for putting the map together.
The tracks were bone dry and the early rain on Saturday morning only served to dampen down the dust. The tracks were the driest Jill and I have seen for 20 years. The track through Easby to the west of Captain Cooks, normally a swamp, was totally dry.
Thank you for all of your positive comments. Plenty of smiles at the finish or was it grimacing after the Little Kildale/Baysdale loop ?
Well done to the category winners – particularly to Dave L, first timer to NYMBO, on a great score and 4100ft of climb (proper hills !) and to Angela B-B for a storming score.
Thankfully we were all done and dusted and controls collected before the heavens opened.

It was great to see so many people out for this event, both those who wanted to take advantage of the glorious weather as well as those looking to avoid the Royal Wedding !
Fortunately the riding conditions were much drier and faster than those I encountered during my planning rides in March and April.
I felt the course was quite challenging in terms of route choice and this seem to be reflected in the results with a wide variety of route choice evident. I did place quite a few high value controls in the north west corner to encourage riders in that direction and then decide if they had the time or legs to take in West Tansfield and North Tansfield.

It’s three weeks until our next event in Nidderdale on Saturday 19th May. It’s a 4 hour event, and it’s planned by Neil Reed:
Needless to say that during the planning process in March and April the weather has been at best damp and the ground has been soft and slippery – although my so called racing tyres no doubt didn’t help in that respect !
The event area is essentially an 8 km radius around the registration and finish based at Grewelthorpe Village hall just south of Masham. The River Ure runs through the area with limited crossing points which could be a factor in route choice.
The controls are spread on a selection of roads, tracks and bridleways. I had initially envisaged it might be a “fast” course, however there are enough hills and given the current soft ground this might not be the case !
We hope to provide basic refreshments but I am reliably informed there is a café in the village that should be open all day.
Car Parking has kindly been provided by Newholme Campsite located approximately 500m south of the village hall. I will try to ensure the usual signage is in place.

Planner’s report:
Corinne and I had a really good day in the forest on Friday riding round in glorious sunshine getting the controls set up. I’m sure all the riders agree we could not have wanted a better day for the event.
It was quite surprising how much the tracks had dried up over the last few days. So much so that both the soft track around the far north east of the map overlooking Newtondale escarpment and the bridleway down to 55 at Cawthorne beck became unexpectedly enjoyable rides.
With the tracks having dried out I was anticipating that the fastest riders may have been just about able to clear the course in the allocated 3 hours. However the highest score was Mark Rowley’s 483 so gladly it was about right.
It was good to hear so many comments from riders on their return saying how they had really enjoyed their rides. There were a couple of people that struggled to find control 37 on the footbridge but those that did confirmed it was in the correct place.
It was a shame we only had 43 riders. Thanks to everyone for coming, and especially thanks to all the helpers. Thanks also to the Keldy Cabins site management for letting us use the cafe and their facilities.
