Malham Show Report

Malham Show Organiser’s Comments

Geoff and I enjoyed planning the course this year after Chris Wildman couldn’t find anyone to replace Andy Murphy. We did use the pick of his controls from the last 6 years, reduced the size of the competition area and didn’t put any controls on the Arncliffe road. You seemed to enjoy it and the weather made the riding perfect.

Thanks as ever to Jens for another excellent map; Geoff Moorhouse, David & Zoe Cowgill and Simon & Jack Coiley for putting out the controls on Friday; then Kevin Smith, John Dixon, Ray Morriss, Michael Connor and David & Zoe Cowgill (after her 4 hour run) for collecting them in before the rain started on Saturday.

Congratulations again to Graham Tibbott M21-439 for holding off Alex M40-409 (with a lot of local knowledge) and Andrew M40-404 (who doesn’t need to know an area to score well) by over 30 points. The other leaders were Conrad Ellison M50-364, Roger de Faye M70-324, Heather Tufts W21-322, Ray Morriss M60-320, Angela & Tony Brand Barker X50-279, Sue Austin/Alex Davies W40-278, Clare de Faye W60-240, Jill Ellison W50-213, Karen Blackburn W70-195, and Jeffrey & (10 year old) Laura Barber Gen-164. You can follow their routes using the splits file and course map on the NYMBO site.

I enjoyed both rides because the scenery is always fantastic, the weather was perfect and the tracks were mainly remarkably dry after the recent rain. However, I would rather compete so please volunteer to plan the course if you want the event to continue next year. I wanted to go for a short ride to take a few photos once you had started but couldn’t because the NYMBO computer wouldn’t recognise the BMBO Splits printer. Geoff and I had to recreate the whole event on the BMBO computer before the first finisher returned – and the generator kept cutting out!! I also couldn’t work out how to create the age classes which is why the results are just on one page. It never quite goes right at Malham!! Finally, my apologies to Denis for getting his age wrong!

The next NYMBO event is on Monday, 29th August where you can sample Dave Lloyd’s excellent course in Dalby Forest which is also part of the Eborienteers White Rose weekend. Don’t forget to print the flier so that you get the reduced FC toll charge of £4.

The 9th & 10th events in the NYMBO league are part of the OMM Bike weekend at Cropton on September 17th/18th. All 4 courses count on both days and you can enter the 3 hour option on the BMBO site. However, you need to enter the longer courses on the OMM web site and the event is nearly full so don’t leave it too late.

Hope to see you at another event soon

Steve

MOORS MARATHON

Marathon Comments
It was great to see 57 riders setting off in the sunshine on Sunday morning which was twice as many as last year. Everyone seemed to enjoy their rides and the tracks were much drier than they have been all year but the westerly wind was tough to ride against across the moors.
Thanks to the Fox and Rabbit who allowed us to park for free, FC for not charging the permit fee and Jens Strain for drawing an excellent map. Thanks also to Keith Butler at Whitbourne Mugworks for providing the excellent commemorative mugs at an excellent price. I ordered 36 originally and he had 18 more delivered within 24 hours on Friday and has also posted an extra one to Phil Moorhouse, the 55th finisher.
We had decided to change the route after Louven Howe to avoid the muddy bridleway but most riders missed the left turn in Sneaton Forest and took the next left along a forest road which meant they had to find their way out onto the bridleway on the moor. I’ll probably tape it next year. We had also changed the route across the Murk Esk to avoid the slippery ford and the narrow footbridge and steps near Grosmont Church, I hope you didn’t curse me too much on the climb up the road from Esk Valley. I also moved #7 west of Yatts Farm so that C course riders weren’t tempted to use the road – and there was also a convenient fingerpost to attach the control. Unfortunately, a few riders missed it!! I will mark the manned and unmanned controls next year and change the text at the junction north of #7 where the 300m of muddy track confused a few riders. Hopefully, none of the above spoilt anyone’s ride and you’ll be back next year with even more mates!!
The mountain rescue team had to leave the control at Bloworth Crossing to deal with 2 incidents. So I was very grateful that they went back to collect it in afterwards.
We have donated £350 to the Scarborough & Ryedale Mountain Rescue Team who’s Just Giving web page is at http://www.srmrt.org.uk/get-involved/donate/
We also donated £50 to the Northern Congenital Hyperinsulinism Service (NORCHI) in support of Matthew Streets’ fundraising efforts on behalf of his daughter Grace. Their web page is at https://www.justgiving.com/fundraising/Streetsswanborough1
Thanks also to everyone who helped on the day. Barbara at Registration and the control marshals – John Dixon, Jens & Eileen Strain, Michael Brough, Roger Hartley & SRMRT plus Brendon Smurthwaite who collected 6 & 7 when you had all finished.
Hopefully, we will repeat the event next July so I hope you will be riding again and bringing more mates – as well as a few more to NYMBO events in between.
Cheers

Wykeham & Broxa Comments

Wykeham & Broxa Organiser’s Comments

Thanks to Jeff Harris for an excellent course in these 2 mature forests separated by the steep sided Derwent Valley. The wet winter and spring followed by a mild, damp summer meant that the vegetation had grown vigorously so some of the tracks were quite overgrown so that I can still feel the effects of the thistles and nettles. Also, most of the smaller tracks were soft so the going was tougher than usual. However, none of this stopped Graham Tibbot from visiting all bar one of the controls!!

Thanks as ever to Jens for another excellent map, Geoff Moorhouse, Karen Blackburn and John Dixon for helping on the day and Tim Evans, Edwyn Oliver-Evans, Adrian Parker, Michael Brough, Dave Evans and Graham Tibbot who collected the controls after they had finished.

Congratulations to Graham Tibbott and the other leaders were Andrew Windrum M40, Mark Rowley M50, Roger de Faye M60, Sheila Pearce W40, Jill Ellison W50, Clare de Faye W60, Angela & Tony Brand Barker X50 and Chris & Roy Partington (Gen). You can follow their routes using the splits file and course map on the NYMBO site.

I enjoyed my ride despite the mud and nettles but just stayed in Wykeham Forest so that I didn’t have the dubious pleasure of the byway at Thompson’s Stepping Stones.

The next NYMBO events are on the August Bank Holiday weekend at Malham and Dalby. On Saturday, 27th August, Geoff Moorhouse and I have planned a course based on the best of the controls used over the last 6 years. On Monday, 29th August you can sample Dave Lloyd’s excellent course in Dalby Forest which is also part of the Eborienteers White Rose weekend.

Hope to see you at another event soon

Steve

Wykeham results now online

You’ll find the results and splits from Saturday’s event here.IMG_2865

The full report should follow tomorrow, but in the meantime, here’s a reminder that events at this time of year are a constant battle between rider and the undergrowth – thistles on the bridleway between controls 46 and 36.
