Moors Marathon – A brilliant day on the purple-clad moors

Splits are on the Results page

It’s a pity that there were only 27 riders but they raised £200 for the Scarborough & Ryedale Mountain Rescue Team. Some of the tracks were a bit muddy but the weather was much better than the previous day’s cold north-westerly wind. Thanks to Jens for another excellent map which he printed free of charge, Barbara for helping me at the start and finish, FC for not charging for a permit, the Fox & Rabbit for an excellent event centre and BMBO for waiving the levy fees. Finally, a special thanks to Frank & Sandra Appleton who were the marshals at Breckon Howe then collected the rest of the controls in after the riders had passed through them.

Hopefully, we will celebrate the tenth running of this event next year with a lot more riders.

Updated League Results

Thanks to John Dixon adding your scores from Malham and Pickering. Please let me know if there are any mistakes. There are still 4 events left so plenty of opportunity for change

LEAGUE 2015 after 7 events

James is ahead in Y18 but Nathan & Max can both score well if they get the opportunity to ride

Roy & Chris Partington have a lead of 4 points over Steve & Ben Collins but have ridden one more event

Graham Tibbott has a 40 point lead over Ben Martin in M21

There have only been 2 rides in W21 so it depends on who turns up

Phil Collings has a 22 point lead over David Cowgill and they’ve both ridden 5 events but AW and AC have only ridden 3 times this year so who knows.

Sheila Pearce has a strong lead in W40 so looks like repeating her winning ways from last year

John Rawden has a lead of 16 points over Michael Nayler but Tim Evans has averaged 85 points per event so far

Helen Bagley has a clear lead in W50

David Day has a 17 point lead over Ray Morriss in M60 but plenty of riders still in with a chance

Karen Blackburn looks like she’s going to win W60 again

Andrea & Steve Foster have a clear lead in X50 over Ralph & Chris Defty and not many teams competing in the other age groups.

All 4 courses at the OMM Bike in Swaledale on both days count for the NYMBO League. The par score will be worked out from the highest points per hour on any of the courses.

If the best score on Saturday is 700 on the Polaris then it will be 700 on Long, 500 on Short and 300 on the 3 hour course.

If the best score on Sunday is 240 points on the 3 hour course then it will be 400 points on Polaris or Long and 320 on Short

You can still enter the main event on http://www.theomm.com until September 11th and the 3 hour course on http://www.bmbo.org.uk until September 16th. Hope to see you there.

Volunteers needed for the Moors Marathon

We have got 30 entries for the Moors Marathon but only 2 volunteer marshals. (Thanks, Frank & Sandra). Please let me know if you would like to marshal a checkpoint usually for 3 hours so that the riders get some refreshments on their 100k ride. It will also mean that I don’t have to collect the controls in at dawn on Monday!! Cheers, Steve

2015 Cropton and Newtondale 30000 Working Drawing with Controls 1st August

It was disappointing that there were only 56 riders and we need to start increasing our numbers if we are going to break even this year so please let your friends know about our events. I thoroughly enjoyed my ride despite the weather. The tracks were really tough so I didn’t have the time to get over to Needle Point once I crossed the road unlike Andrew Windrum.

We have got 4 more events this month!!

Sunday 6th September – Moors Marathon – 4 routes of 100/75/50/25k starting from the Fox & Rabbit with all profits going to the Scarborough & Ryedale Mountain Rescue Team. Commemorative mugs for all finishers. We have only got 25 entries so please enter online or email your details if you want to reserve a map. I still need 2 more control marshals if you would like to help.

Saturday 19th & Sunday 20th September – OMM Bike in Swaledale and all courses on both days are included in the NYMBO league. You can enter the Polaris, Long or Short courses on the OMM event site at www.theomm.com until Sept 11th. Youcan enter the 3 hour course on either day at www.bmbo.org.uk until Sept 16th. We have already had 75 pre-entries (as well as 150 runners) so it promises to be a great weekend. I have planned the courses and Jens has drawn the map.

Sunday 27th September – Cleveland Hills. Conrad & Jill have planned a cracking course from the Lord Stones Cafe at Carlton Bank.

I hope you can make it to one or more of them.

Steve

Dalby Planners’ Comments

We really enjoyed visiting Dalby to check the control sites and then riding the trails again to hang controls Friday evening and Saturday morning. Dalby provides great route choice and excellent tracks for all abilities and it was great to hear people telling me how much they had enjoyed their rides on the finish line, even some who had struggled to find one or two controls.

As we have to do the planning several months in advance of the event in order to get the permissions and maps prepared conditions can change on the tracks. It was March when we went out to the forest to check out potential control sites and my photos of most of the sites looked totally different to what we found on Friday evening. I did try to pick locations where we could get the controls close to the path hoping they would not be too overgrown this clearly didn’t always work out. There were several sites where we had to beat the bracken down on Friday evening to get the sites we had  planned and there were a couple of sites, e.g. 57 where we moved the control across or along the path slightly to avoid the vegetation. Sites 51 and 45 confused a few people, so sorry if you wasted some time or could not find them. If in doubt make sure you read the description for control placements – these two were a little way from the map feature – I thought I had marked them clearly with red and white tape, but maybe it had gone missing.

The last event I planned in Dalby was September 2010. We had about 100 riders at that event and Andy Conn was the only person to get all of the controls, but 4 minutes late back. This time I laid the controls out to make the total distance a bit less for 2015 and so thought possible someone might clear the course. I also put several high scoring controls near the start to give the fitter riders more of a challenge and a more satisfying ride with some high scoring controls for the majority. I hope people liked this. It was a shame we did not have so many riders this year with the clash with the start of the school holidays, but we had some pretty high scores with Graham Tibbot and Tim Evans getting most controls.
