It was great to see 96 riders enjoy the spring sunshine on the North York Moors once they had climbed onto the escarpment where the views were stunning. (Another improvement of 50 riders on what was a NEMBOS event last year). Conrad & Jill had planned another excellent and challenging course which everyone seemed to enjoy.

Thanks as ever to Jens for another excellent map and the helpers who made everything run smoothly as well as Ingleby Greenhow Village Hall for an excellent event centre.

Andrew Windrum won the battle of the Andy’s by 10 points and they were both well ahead of the third placed rider in M40. Rik Thompson won M21 (408) for 3^rd Overall while Ed Oliver Evans over-reached himself to lose all of his 450 points. Neil Reed won M50 for the first time with 365 points while Ray Morriss won M60 for the second month in a row with 330. James Martin took advantage of Ed’s mistake to win M18 with an excellent 320 points and Adrian & Luke Parker also scored well to win the Generation class with 315 points. Dave & Kelly Wilby took the Mixed honours with 295 points while Sheila Pearce (W40) was the leading lady again with 260. You can follow their splits and check out the map on the NYMBO web site.

I had already decided on my basic route before the event ( as I had seen the map) and I wanted to ride around Baysdale, Bilsdale and Hasty Bank. I managed although I was 3 minutes late and thoroughly enjoyed my ride (except for pushing my bike up onto Cold Moor and down through the forest to #53), the views were stunning and descents very fast especially on my new 29er!!

Thanks again to the helpers who enabled me to ride and finally to Steve Langron, Dave Lloyd, Andy Conn, John Rawden and Ray Morriss who helped Conrad to collect the controls after their rides. Everything was collected in by 5.30 so I was home by 6.30.

Planners’ Comments

We really enjoyed planning the event and putting out the controls on Friday was a joy with the great weather.  Our intention was to provide plenty of route choice and no one obvious route. A big thanks to Ingleby Greenhow Village Hall, Dudley Arms for the use of their car park and to Steve and Jens for their support during the planning.

It’s only 8 days until our next NYMBO event which is a4 hour event at Ingleton on Monday 26^th May. Ben Martin has planned an excellent course around (not over) Ingleborough on the excellent bridleway network.

2014 Barningham 50000 Working Drawing with Controls 23rd February Congratulations to Ben Martin on his first overall win when the event was dominated by a strong westerly wind.

It was great to see 80 riders travel north for what would have been a NEMBOS event last year. I thoroughly enjoyed checking out these rarely visited bridleways north of Swaledale. I knew that some of them didn’t exist on the ground so I was very pleased when 3 gamekeepers allowed us to use the private estate tracks across Barningham, Hurst and Scargill Moors. The wind made riding west very difficult so not many riders opted for the long route up the Pennine Way.

Scores were lower than usual due to the strong wind so congratulations to the category winners especially Ben Martin (M21) who won overall for the first time with 367 points, Phil Webster (M50) 353, Phil Upton (M40) 336, Ray Morriss (M60) 331, James Martin (M18) 280, Sheila Pearce (W40) 280, James Annan & Julia Hargreaves (X50) 230 on a tandem, Alan & Ben Botham (Gen) for the second event in a row with 175. Andrew Windrum wasn’t well enough to ride so retired after an hour and Andy Conn had a mechanical so everyone will be scoring more league points than usual this month!!
I wasn’t particularly looking forward to collecting controls having listened to your comments about the wind as you finished. Fortunately, the sun came out and the wind dropped so I had a great ride above Barningham collecting 41 57 (taped route) 52 and 38. Andy & Chris Parson had a long but enjoyable off-road drive across Hurst Moor and the Pennine Way. Thanks also to Jenny Sutton, John Dixon, Graham Townsend and Phill & Sarah Collings who collected the other 16 controls. Everything was collected in by 6.15 and I was home by 7.
The next NYMBO event is a 3 hour MBO Score event at Ingleby Greenhow on Saturday 17th May.
Don’t forget that the OMM Bike is in Kielder Forest on 26th & 27th April so more great riding in Kielder, Kershope & Wark Forest using maps drawn by Jens Strain. I’ve planned the courses with a lot of help from Jim Imber and we’re looking forward to putting out the 60 controls next Friday.There will be an exellent event centre at Hawkhope just beneath the dam and 100 riders have already entered. Here’s the map without controls for next weekend for you to peruse. At least it should be here, lets hope it’s worked properly unlike last month.

Every year we like to support the hard work of the Scarborough and Ryedale Mountain Rescue Team. One of their fundraising events is a half marathon – here’s some information from Tony Heap if you want to take part. Links to fliers included at the end.

Just to let you and your fellow bikers know that this years Ravenscar Coastal Half Marathon organised by the Scarborough and Ryedale Mountain Rescue Team is Sunday 11th May 2014, in the past we have had a number of runners from the wider umbrella of clubs entering the event on a sporadic bases which has been a great support, so I have attached the entry form and poster, everything same as last year (still £10 pre entry), you may be interested to know the local Mountain Rescue team Organises this event as a fundraisers so it’s a relaxed low key affair, but it might be of interest to your bikers as something different. It certainly not a fell race but as the height gain and loss over the 13.1miles is 1100 it’s a nice undulating run mainly on coastal footpaths, so some of your bikers may fancy a different challenge that will work some different muscles and all the £10 goes straight to the Mountain Rescue Team.

It was our busiest callout year last year, that has 2 impacts on the Team, firstly we spend more money and 2nd we lost a lot of fundraising events actually doing callouts, so this fixture really help the team, so it would be really great if you could pass on to your runners or anyone you know who may be interested, we are good at search and rescue and quite a few mountain bikers, but complete novices at advertising so any help appreciated in spreading the word on the event which is in its 4th year but lacking in numbers (100 to 130 of last few years), so even just putting up the poster at one of your events would be a great help.

Conrad and Jill have been hard at work planning the May event, here’s and update from them:

Jill and I have enjoying planning the event.  We’ve hired Ingleby Greenhow village hall for the event centre so it’s a guaranteed downhill finish.  We’ve put most of the Great Broughton to Chop Gate road (B1257) as out of bounds and all but one of the checkpoints is in the NYM National Park.

It’s given us chance to ride and walk bridleways we haven’t visited in ages over the likes of Urra and Cold Moor.  Last weekend we did our last recce and the tracks were bone dry (will it last ?!!).

For those of you who can remember Richard Martin planned an event from Lordstones at the top of Carlton Bank a few years ago.  The event will cover a similar area except we’re not going as far to the west as Richard did and covering a bit more to the east over Baysdale Moor.

NYMBO League Handicaps (Updated 5th April)

Congratulations to the winners who can claim a free entry (by email) for Barningham in April – Simon Horlock, John Skelton, Helen Bagley, Chris Hollingbery, Ruth Greenwood & Graeme Murray

I worked out the handicaps based on your results in the NYMBO, BMBO and NEMBOS leagues last year as well as the 3 winter events. If it worked perfectly everyone would end up with the same score as the winner. 44 riders scored more than Andrew Windrum’s 506 points so I need to do some tweaking before Barningham. Any comments/suggestions will be gratefully received.

I have a full list of everyone’s handicap  which I will post before Barningham once I have made a few changes.
