Wensleydale MBO Organiser’s Comments

Thanks to Mike Allenby at Stage1Cycles for an excellent event centre and for planning the course then providing everyone with discount vouchers; Tim Evans for another excellent map; and Geoff Moorhouse for looking after Registration and Download despite being unable to ride and all of the control collectors.

Saturday was one of the wettest days I have ever spent on my bike in the hills when I put out 10 controls around Addlebrough for Mike – winter jacket and tights with full waterproofs and my hood up underneath my helmet. Every track was a stream and the wind was howling so I’m just glad it wasn’t cold. We decided to close 4 fords and not use #52 to avoid the risk of anyone drowning. Fortunately, the Met Office got the forecast wrong again so it stopped raining and the wind dropped so the tracks had dried out overnight and the streams were following their normal course.

Congratulations to Graham Tibbott for yet another excellent score of 443; Mark Chryssanthou M40 390; Mark Rowley M50 393; John Rawden M60 300; Al & Jake Powell Gen 270; Jemima Parker outscoring the other ladies with 235 points and Dean & Molly Ralpheson winning the mixed at their first attempt with 253 points. You can follow all of their routes using the splits file and course map on the NYMBO site.

Prizes donated by Yorkshire Dales Brewery were presented to the winners of each category and the other leading riders will be receiving their NYMBO tee shirts as soon as they arrive.

There will be a series of winter events but we need a planner for an event near York in March. Details as soon as the dates have been approved by BMBO

Tim Evans has offered to co-ordinate the NYMBO 2019 League but he will need volunteers to plan the events so please let him know if you are willing.

Swaledale MBO Organiser’s Comments

Updated results here. Thanks to everyone who made the event possible:

• the gamekeepers who raised no objections to an event in the shooting season and allowed us to use many private tracks where the public bridleways don’t exist
•  Stuart & Brenda Price for an excellent event centre and Claire Brown for the parking field
•  John Rawden, Mike Barnard and Dave Barker for helping put out controls on Saturday
• Tim Evans for another excellent map and for looking after the Start
• John Dixon for looking after Download
• Ray Morriss, Mike Barnard, Simon Coiley, Graham Tibbot, Michael Connor, Al & Jake Powell and Stuart Price for collecting the controls after you had headed home – and it was a stunning evening!
• the Met Office for getting the forecast so wrong

I thoroughly enjoyed planning the course and checking all of the bridleways in June. I reduced the size of the map so I was really pleased that Graham didn’t quite clear the controls. I tried to choose the better bridleways and leave out the indistinct and soft ones. It’s a great area and the weather on Sunday was perfect so everyone seemed to enjoy their rides.

#55 caused problems for a few riders. It was in exactly the right place as shown on the map and on the description sheet but it was 50m west of a very indistinct junction so please let me know if you couldn’t find it and I’ll give you the points!

Congratulations to Graham Tibbott for another excellent score of  503 only leaving out 2 controls; Jill Ellison outscoring the other ladies with 225 points and the Defty’s winning the mixed with 220 points. Plus a special mention to Autumn Grey (aged 6) who was out for over 3 hours and scored 55 points on the excellent Swale Trail.  You can follow all of their routes using the splits file and course map on the NYMBO site.

The final NYMBO league event of the season is at Stage One Cycles in Hawes, Wensleydale on Sunday 14th October with starts between 11.00 and 12.00. Please stay for the presentation afterwards to applaud the winners. Online entry here

There will be a series of winter events. I will plan one near Richmond in December, Tim Evans will plan one near Harrogate in February so please let me know if you would like to plan one in your area in November, January and March.

DUNCOMBE PARK PLANNERS REPORT

This year’s NYMBO event in association with Eborienteers’ White Rose event was again in the
Helmsley area; the course covered a similar area to last year’s event at the White Rose with a slight shift to the South to include the area south of the River Rye. This year we were fortunate to have the event centre in t1he grounds of Duncombe Park, giving plenty of scope for route choice from the Start and back to the Finish, but unfortunately it meant an uphill finish which ever direction you came from.
Judging by comments at the finish everyone enjoyed the event, I heard one rider had a issue with one of the farmers, I went into the estate office on Tues they apologised and said all of the tenants were informed about our event; regarding #49 that went missing this was on FC land so I’ll let them know as about it, anyone that visited the control will have been credited with the points if you told Dave at download.
Thanks to Tim for producing the map and drawing on all the tracks in the forests and on the
Duncombe Park Estate land, I didn’t ask Tim to highlight the B/W in the SE corners of the map as I thought they were clear enough?

Thanks to Jeff Harris for an excellent course enjoyed by 61 riders in another beautiful part of North Yorkshire. It was very disappointing to hear that #49 had gone missing but hopefully it didn’t spoil your ride and I have given everyone the points. Please let me know if there are any mistakes in the results. Apologies to Michael Connor who was forced to turn round by a gamekeeper at #36. This shouldn’t have happened so he has been credited with the time he lost and I hope no-one else had the same problem. The landowner had given permission to use this track so I will let him know.

Our next event is in Swaledale on SUNDAY 23rd September. Hope to see you there.

Malham Show Report

Thank you for all the positive comments at the finish despite your exhaustion from all that climbing! Results are here

I enjoyed planning in such beautiful countryside. It was obviously a little drier and faster on my planning rides. Having got soaked a good few times and even hailed on during Friday while setting out controls I was worried how soggy the going may get. Luckily, I don’t think anywhere deteriorated too much and all the views remained stunning with the weather finally blessing us on the day!

Massive thank you to all that helped make the event possible. Firstly as always to Steve Willis for help and guidance on the organisation side along with Chris Wildman from the Malham Show end.
Big thank you to Tim Evans for another great map and his invaluable help with setting out on Friday meaning that I had time for tea! Also, special mention for Geoff Moorhouse and family for manning the computer, registration and download.
Last but not least to all the control collectors after such an exhausting ride!:
Graham Tibbot, Ray Morris, John Rawden, Sion James, Ifor Powell, Kevin Moorhouse-Smith and Steve & Ben Collins.

Route wise, I aimed to make it a little harder decision at the start with which hill to set off up first and then give you plenty of options or headaches from there!
Hopefully I succeeded to some extent? From the results and comments there did seem to be some good variation in routes. I think perhaps there is scope to reduce the size of the area and map next time.

Congratulations to all class winners: Graham Tibbot for another impressive ride (1st overall and M21) with Ifor Powell a close second and taking M50 honours. Excellent rides from Ray Morris (M70) in 6th o/all and Angela Brand-Barker (W50) and 10th o/all. Erika Tibbot (W21), Clare De Faye (W60), Karen Blackburn (W70), Tony Brand-Barker (M60), Richard Murray (M40), Andrea & Steve Foster (X50), Christine & John Myerscough (X60), Steve & Ben Collins (Gen) and Jill Ellison (W40).
In the 2 hour course honours were taken by Kevin & Madeline Moorhouse-Smith.

Can we please just remind riders that footpaths are always out of bounds unless expressed otherwise or marked permissive on the map (we had a couple of riders reported to have used one).
