The dates for the Winter League have (mostly) been agreed, and all of the details are on the flier NYMBO Winter 2019-20 v3

All events are the usual 2 hour treasure hunt format, with event centre from a local pub. All details, including the blank course map will be available about one week beforehand. Online entry via BMBO
Over the winter we’ll be planning the Main League events for 2020, and it would be good to get your feedback on your preferred event length from 2019 so we can see if we got the balance right or whether any changes are needed.
In 2019 we had 10 events, two were 3 hours; five were 4 hours; and three were 5 or more ( the two days at Swaledale offered options). Please vote in the poll and give any feedback in the comments box below. Thanks for your help!

The weather on Saturday could not have been better for an October event, and certainly better than the wet Friday that Liz had to contend with for putting out controls. Thanks to Liz and Harry for their efforts in putting together an excellent and challenging course. Here’s her report:
I’m a very slow mountain biker and took on planning a NYMBO in the hope of getting some training in while recceing the course. I was forced to go to those 30-pointers that I usually don’t bother with and I seemed to spend a lot of time pushing my bike uphill into a prevailing gale.
There are a lot of good bridleways in Wensleydale but not a lot of bridges over the Ure so having the event centre by the Aysgarth Falls bridge gave more route choices immediately from the start. We needed to have the bridges at Worton and and Wensley on the map and I wanted to take the event as far as possible into Coverdale since I don’t think NYMBO has been there recently. This made for a big map and I probably did not need to fill all of it with controls. I haven’t seen the routes yet – did anyone beside me (putting out) and Harry (collecting in) go up Stakes Allotment? Anyway we both enjoyed the decent if not the climb up. (editors note – 7 riders went up to control 28 at Stakes Allotments, although the results two riders went from control 13 but did not get control 18 which seems odd)
The weather turned out pretty well in the end – just the sight of a bit of sunshine improves morale. I thought the Falls Cafe turned out an excellent venue and thank you to them for being so helpful at short notice when the alternative was not. The organisation for NYMBO events seems quite ..er.. relaxed and I was not sure how it was supposed to go but thanks to Steve, Dave and John who made that happen and to Tim for the map and rounding up a large band of helpers to collect in, and thanks to the helpers and especially Adrian and Ben for getting the tough 30-pointers. Also thanks to my partner Harry who ended up doing much more mountain bike training than me over the weekend.
I hope everyone enjoyed their day in Wensleydale – thanks for entering and turning up when the weather was not looking so promising.

Here are the results from yesterday’s event in Wensleydale. The weather was kind compared to other days recently, and hopefully everyone had a good ride! Thanks to Liz for sterling efforts planning the course. Full report to follow.

Centred on Aysgarth Falls, the course covers the the fells north and south of Wensleydale with excursions into Coverdale and Bishopdale.
It’s a 4 hour event; registration 10.30 – 11.45 starts 11.00 – 12.00
The event planner is Liz Potterton who says “I think I’ve got enough far flung controls that no-one should cleanup but it might be a close thing.“Which is just what’s needed for the last event!
The event centre is the Falls Coffee Shop (GR 011884 Church Bank, Aysgarth DL8 3SR; Signposted off the A684 between Leyburn and Hawes) – note this change from the original location of the Aysgarth Falls Hotel.
Parking is in the pay-and-display car park on the road south from the Aysgarth Falls. The parking fee is a much-reduced £2 – there may be a parking attendant, in which case please pay them the £2 fee; if not please do not pay-and-display but get pay at the cafe. You can also order food for after the event. We have a separate function room for food and prize-giving afterwards.
League presentations will take place after the event finishes, please order food and stay to support the category winners!

Our last league event of 2019 is on Saturday October 12th at Aysgarth – blank map and details to follow in due course – but you can enter online now and mark the date in your diary!
Unfortunately, our plans to hold an MTBO event on 22nd September were derailed by the really high access charges – sorry about that!

Thanks to Stuart & Brenda and their staff at Dales Biking for a great event centre and it was brilliant to be riding in Swaledale so soon after the devastating flood.
By Saturday the tracks had dried out well and the weather was perfect. I thought I had made the area large enough to prevent Graham from clearing up but he visited all 30 controls with 13 minutes to spare!

For Sunday, my thanks to Will Wilson, Dennis Jaques, Sheila Pearce, John Dixon and Mike Barnard for helping me put out the controls on Saturday and the Dales Bike Centre for another warm welcome.
The weather was even better than Saturday which made it hard to believe how bad the storm had been a month ago. Incredibly, the bridge over Cogden Gill had been replaced so we could get onto Redmire and Preston Moors although most riders opted for the Swale Trail as a gentle start. I didn’t have a cunning plan. I just check out the bridleways then spread out the controls on the better ones. Graham and Mark both left out one (different) control so hopefully the course was just the right length.
Sadly, #51 was stolen before the early riders arrived but Carl Vincent found it in the river so was able to replace it for the later riders. Please accept my apologies for #31 being on the wrong gate and for the incorrectly drawn track NE of #56. I hope it didn’t spoil your ride.
