Planner’s report:

Corinne and I had a really good day in the forest on Friday riding round in glorious sunshine getting the controls set up. I’m sure all the riders agree we could not have wanted a better day for the event.

It was quite surprising how much the tracks had dried up over the last few days. So much so that both the soft track around the far north east of the map overlooking Newtondale escarpment and the bridleway down to 55 at Cawthorne beck became unexpectedly enjoyable rides.

With the tracks having dried out I was anticipating that the fastest riders may have been just about able to clear the course in the allocated 3 hours. However the highest score was Mark Rowley’s 483 so gladly it was about right.

It was good to hear so many comments from riders on their return saying how they had really enjoyed their rides. There were a couple of people that struggled to find control 37 on the footbridge but those that did confirmed it was in the correct place.
It was a shame we only had 43 riders. Thanks to everyone for coming, and especially thanks to all the helpers. Thanks also to the Keldy Cabins site management for letting us use the cafe and their facilities.

This is the first event in the 2018 NYMBO series.
The event centre is at KELDY CABINS YO18 8HW; 5 miles north of the A170 at Pickering.
3 hour event.
REGISTER 11.30 – 12.45 STARTS 12.00 – 13.00
There is a café at Keldy Cabins courtyard next to the start so should be hot drinks and snacks available before and after the event.

Event parking is on the forest road north of the cabins. Please be aware that this is also one of the possible routes for riders leaving the start or returning to the finish so take great care and give way to riders.

Cropton Forest March 2018

There was snow on the ground when I rode the course to check out control sites back in March. I’m sure the on the day the snow will be long gone and the routes a lot faster than I rode it. However, given all the recent rain the smaller tracks will be slow or very slow and so best avoided. Some of the steep sections of single track are very technical and slippery so please take due care, especially the routes down into Newtondale on the eastern edge of the map. The great thing about Cropton and Newtondale Forests is the network of gravel forest tracks with plenty of fast riding route choice.

Most of the controls are situated on or close to gravel forest roads or a minor road, which should allow you to take some fast routes around the forest. There are a few controls on potentially linked by softer route, so think carefully over the direction you travel to visit these. Even if there are shorter routes between controls cutting across between main tracks it will generally be quicker to take longer routes on harder tracks.

Thanks to Stage1Cycles for hosting the event and Tim for an excellent map. Fortunately, the snow had melted lower down so 27 of the original 30 controls were still accessible. (22, 27 & 17 were knee deep). Congratulations to local rider Mark Daniel who won overall and well done to Generation pair Steve & Ben Collins for finishing second. I thoroughly enjoyed planning the course in January and deliberately restricted the course to the roads in 2 valleys. The ford at Marsett was interesting and tested some riders resolve but well done for turning up and enjoying yourselves.

I have enjoyed planning this event although weather conditions have resulted in the planning being a bit later than I wanted and I ended up in a snow storm two weeks ago, you can see the ride on viewranger and some of the clues including a few that I decided against http://my.viewranger.com/track/details/Njc0ODY1MQ==

I still find new locations and things I hadn’t seen before. I had forgotten how undulating the valley was but managed to ride down all of the bridleways I attempted bar one so made that clear to you all. I decided to reduce the area from the last event 4 years ago and looking at the scores I think I got it about right, I haven’t checked if all the controls were visited but I know all the 30 pointers were visited but nobody visited them all. I also took out some controls last week as some of the bridleways were pretty grim. Congratulations to the category winners and commiserations to Ian Nixon who was on for the win but had a series of mechanicals 1 hour 48 minutes in when climbing the hill out of Darley so had to limp back and arrived 32 minutes late. Please could the winners post your routes.

Thanks must go to Bridget my long suffering better half for helping out with Registration along with Simon Coiley and to the Queens Head for excellent facilities, a very cordial welcome, and superb food. They would like us back!

This event touches on the network of lanes of Nidderdale with a few Bridleways to the north of the area. I have ridden all the off road routes that you are likely to use and in current conditions those marked as soft were rideable on a cross bike in a downhill direction , I had to walk up some of the hills.

The pub is offering breakfast and coffee before the ride so if anyone would like a bacon butty and/or a cup of coffee before hand can they please let me know on  before Thursday 15th so I can let the pub know – dormiceuk@yahoo.co.uk

Kettlesing Blank

The next NYMBO event is at Kettlesing on February 17th, entry here

The provisional league dates for 2018 were published a couple of weeks ago, but the April event (proposed as Dalby Forest) needs a course planner. As we’ve done plenty of events there previously there are previous course maps to draw inspiration from – please get in touch if you’d like to volunteer.

There are no plans for a Moors Marathon at the moment – would be good to hear if this is something that should be considered – please leave comments on this article. This would also need some willing volunteers to go ahead.

Here’s Rik’s report about the Tadcaster event:

I would like to thank everyone who turned up to ride the event, I seemed as though everyone had a good time, even Steve Willis who got 5 punctures and came back so late he lost a lot of his hard earned points.
I really enjoyed planning the event as I grew up in Tadcaster and used to ride a loop round Catterton, Healaugh and back down the old coach road when I began riding mtb all those years ago. This time I wanted to use the network of minor roads to the East of Tad as I hoped it would give plenty of route choice to get you all thinking, I rode the area a few days before Christmas and the tracks were in good condition but unfortunately hedges had been cut and there were quite a few punctures on the day, I was also told by locals that the coach road that I told everyone was ok was muddier than ever before. At least the weather was a lot kinder than two years ago although it is definitely warmer riding than sitting outside a pub at this time of year!
I hope all of you who had food were refuelled adequately, it was nice to go back to the Coach and Horses which is under new management following the flooding which devastated it in the weeks after the last event leaving it closed for many months, the flood water was almost as deep as the bar I believe.
It was good to see that Tim Evans made good use of the fact that I did all the map work for him meaning that he could ride the event competitively and with a good score of 425 meant that the map was just right so even the fast boys (and girls) still had to decide which controls to bag and which to leave.
