Planner’s Report

The bridleway between Black Hambleton and High Paradise must be one of the best in Yorkshire so it was no surprise that those of you who finished that way, with the
wind at your backs, had the biggest smiles. Starting high always poses the problem of when and where to regain the height lost but even those who slogged to the finish
from Boltby seemed satisfied with their efforts.

I hope the notes provided beforehand helped. The felling in both forests and the manicuring of fire breaks (unrideable earlier in the year) in Silton significantly changed the
appearance of both areas between initial planning and the actual event although I know that this did not put some of you off venturing onto some of the more difficult tracks
including the downhill section.

I know that some people rode past 54 . The bracken there was head height, completely obscuring the boundary stone, and the control was not visible from the track so it
was double taped. If you punched 35 and 39 let Steve know and you can have the points. Sorry I can’t do anything about time lost for those who rode past then went back.
Generally I’m not altogether in favour of taping every control. My philosophy when planning is that whenever possible the site should be a specific map feature which can
be navigated to and the control should be fully visible from the track (not hidden) whatever direction it is approached from.

Apologies to those of you who visited 40. Had I known that the farmer would harrow and re-seed the field next to the road, plough to the edges of the fields to the SW of the
bridge and that a team of horses would be parachuted in to mess up the section of the track south of the bridge I would not have used it.

High Paradise Farm provided a very civilised event centre and fitting venue for the end of season presentations so thanks to Ginny and her team for their efforts. Biggest
thanks are saved for the volunteers who helped collect the controls afterwards Zoe Cowgill, Carl Vincent, Adrian Baskerville and Andy’s (Conn & Windrum) who waited until after the prize giving and still had everything back by 6 o’clock. It take almost a full day to set out the controls beforehand so It is sobering to think that Andy Conn almost cleared up with time to spare.

Boltby & Silton Forest Organiser’s Comments

Thanks to Dave Lloyd for another excellent course in this great area with fast forest tracks, moorland bridleways and undulating minor roads. Thanks as ever to Jens for another excellent map, Karen Blackburn and John Dixon for helping on the day and Andrew Windrum, Carl Vincent, Adrian Baskerville, Zoe Cowgill and Andy Conn who helped Dave collect the controls after they had finished. Thanks also to Ginny for an excellent event centre at High Paradise Farm where the cafe will be open every weekend until the end of January

Congratulations to Andy Conn winning M40 (and overall) with an impressive ride visiting almost all of the controls for 500 points with Andrew Windrum just 4 points behind; John Houlihan on a rare MBO ride M50-475; Graham Tibbot M21-431; Angela Brand Barker W50-405 and first Woman; Sue Booth W40-394; Ray Morriss was back on form M60-389; Steve & Andrea Foster X50-349 and first Mixed again; Ben & Steve Collins Gen-319; Karen Blackburn W60- 310.You can follow their routes using the splits file and course map on the NYMBO site.

I thoroughly enjoyed my ride as usual and, being non-competitive, could choose to only go down and up the escarpment once. I decided to clear Boltby Forest before heading down the new track to Brickshed Cottage (which will be marked more clearly as a permissive route next time). Roads to Silton then up through the forest and finish along the excellent Cleveland way with a following wind spotting 54 on the way which you can claim if you missed it.

It was good to see a few more riders for the final event of the season but we could do with a few more next year. Thanks for staying to collect your prizes and applaud the leading riders. Thanks also to Yorkshire Dales Brewery and Richardsons Cycles for their sponsorship. The Tee shirts were paid for out of the profit that NYMBO made this year.

The winter events start next month at the Countrymans Inn, Hunton (near Bedale) on Saturday 21^st November and I have got planners for the other 3 so the details are on the web page.

The event centre for the final event is at High Paradise Farm where the café will be open all day so I hope you can make it and stay for the league presentations at 4.30. Prizes have been kindly donated by Yorkshire Dales Brewery and Richardson’s Cycles and leading riders will also receive the ‘highly coveted’ NYMBO Tshirts.

Thanks to Conrad and Jill for planning anoyher excellent course from the newly reopened café at Lordstones. As always, I thoroughly enjoyed my ride once I found my way out of the parking fields by making sure that I didn’t have to climb the steep slope more than once. The tracks were firm except for the bridleway between 48 and 54, the scenery was stunning and the weather was perfect. Here is the map so that you can follow the routes.

The course looked pretty big but Andrew Windrum still managed to visit most of the controls; Phil Upton travelled from the Midlands to win M50 with 400 points, only 45 points behind Andrew. Ray Morriss got it right this month to win M60 with 327. Graham Tibbot was recovering from a tough event in Cannock so couldn’t repeat his score from last week but still managed to win M21, 10 points ahead of Ben Martin. Sue Booth was the highest scoring woman with 343 followed by Angela Brand Barker W50-328 and Karen Clark W60-273. Steve & Andrea confirmed their status as first mixed pair.
Thanks to Jens for another excellent map, Frank & Sandra Appleton and John Dixon for helping on the day and Dave Lloyd, Andrew Windrum, Ray Morriss, John Rawden, David & Zoe Cowgill and Richard & James Martin who collected all of the controls in by 6pm.
I need to start thinking about the winter events. Tim Evans has offered to plan one between Harrogate & Boroughbridge so if you have any suggestions or offers please let me know.
The same applies to next year. We have had too many events recently so I won’t make the same mistake again but please let me know where and when you prefer to ride – especially if you want to plan an event!!
Hopefully, many of you will be able to ride at the final event of the season in Boltby & Silton on October 17th. Dave Lloyd has planned an excellent course and High Paradise will be an excellent event centre with the league presentations taking place at 4.30.

Here are the update scores after the OMM Bike weekend in Swaledale

LEAGUE 2015 after 9 events

Graham Tibbot looks like his winning scores have given him an unassailable lead in M21 and Erica Moks is leading W21. Conrad Ellison has taken the lead in M40 although David Cowgill is only 3 points behind and Phil Collings has only ridden 5 events. Sheila Pearce will win W40 again despite being unable to ride in the last 2 events. John Rawden has taken the lead in M50 with 2 steady rides but he is only 20 point ahead of Michael Nayler and there are a few riders who have only been to 5 events. Helen Bagley had one good ride at the weekend which is enough to ensure that she will win W50. Ray Morriss had 2 good scores at the weekend – despite helping all weekend as well – to take the lead in M60 and the other riders are probably too far behind so are fighting for the minor places in this very competitive class!!! Karen Blackburn had 2 good rides so will definitely win W60.There are no changes in the Mixed classes as Steve Roberts & Karen Clark were the only riders who will now win X60 with Steve & Andrea Foster looking the likely winners in X50 (but Ralph & Chris Defty could catch them with 2 good final scores) and Ruth Greenwood & Graeme Murray in X40 despite a disappointing ride at Swaledale. Chris & Roy Partington are still winning the Generation class but 2 good rides from Adrian & Luke Parker could overhaul them and they did beat their older brother/son in Swaledale although Nathan looks like the likely Youth champion this year.

It is definitely your best 6 scores from 11 to count this year so you have 2 events left so I hope to see you at the Cleveland Hills on Sunday or the final event in Boltby & Silton Forest on October 17th.

The blank map for Saturday’s course is now available – and it looks like it will be a great event. Three hours in a great mix of terrain – and at the moment, the weather forecast looks ok (on Monday!)

Organiser’s Comments

Last weekend 174 runners and 109 mountain bikers took to the hills surrounding Swaledale in the beautiful North Yorkshire Dales for the OMM LITE & OMM BIKE. The event, based at the Dales Bike Centre, saw the competitor’s race around the hills in search of checkpoints spread across the trails and paths of the National Park.

The weather forecast steadily improved all week, even remaining dry for the setup of the event centre and getting the courses out on the hill. By Friday lunchtime everything was ready for competitors to arrive, with Brenda and Stu from the Bike Centre having prepared a mountain of fantastic food. Having the luxury of a slightly later start just over half of the teams registered on Friday evening with the rest coming through on Saturday morning. I may now have to reconsider adding sun cream to the kit list based on the weather we all enjoyed on Saturday. Sunday promised a bright start but the rain was due to arrive by lunchtime but miraculously held off giving perfectly clear conditions with a nice cool breeze, perfect riding and running conditions.

On Saturday the competitor’s set off on their chosen courses of 7, 5 or 3 hours (Long/Polaris, Short or 3 hour non-competitive) to collect as many points as they could within their time allowance. Each team left start line looking determined to find the optimal route around the competition area.

The Polaris Challenge competition was a close run affair with the team of Ian Furlong and Amy Souter being matched on a score of 790 by Kevin Hodgson, closely chased up by Ifor Powell on 744 on the Saturday. Ian and Amy managed to pull in a strong 594 on the second day which was enough to secure them first place overall with Kevin and Ifor coming 2^nd and 3^rd respectively overall.

The Bike Long Score was absolutely dominated by local rider Graham Tibbot who collected a whopping 1007 points on the first day, with the next rider getting 870. This certainly generated a serious volume of conversation over a few beers that evening on whether Graham could possibly have any legs left for the following day and what would be the optimal route to look for. Setting off on the Sunday morning everyone looked fresh, although I am quite sure that there were some seriously sore legs hiding behind the smiles and we waited to see how it would unfold. Collecting another 700 points on Sunday Graham secured a convincing 1^st place overall with a good competition for the remaining podium places being fought out by Mark Rowley, Andy Hilder, Phil Upton and Erica Moks. Special mention has to go to Conrad and Jill Ellison who completed yet another event on their trusty tandem, coming in smiling both days and winning the Mixed Team prize.

The Bike Short Score was another close run affair with Simons Howarth and Kirby lying in 1^st place after day 1, closely followed by Jeff Mew and the teams of Graham and Martin Sellens and Emma van der Gucht and Carina Hirz not far behind. Recently returning from injury, Jeff was not to be outdone and had a strong day2 pushing him into 1^st place overall, forcing both Simons into 2^nd place, with Emma and Carina taking 3^rd overall and 1^st female prizes.

Following the success of the last OMM Lite in Bamford we were really looking forward to welcoming all the teams to this event. The concept behind the event is to provide a platform for experienced runners to stretch their legs and get the training miles in, whilst also offering a very relaxed platform for people who have never done anything like this before and the feedback is that you like it! It was great to see a good mixture of experienced OMM competitors and those coming to the challenge for the first time. I am looking forward to finding out how the event has worked as a training event for the OMM later next month with quite a few teams lining it up for the first time.

The winning team of Ralph Baines and Barry Awan on the OMM Lite Long Score who took 1st place overall and the Veterans prize proved that experience counts for a lot over the younger legs of Fred Prall and Johan Gausden who finished only 27 points behind after the two days, beating Richard Walklate and Charles Brent into 3^rd place overall with an extremely tight 3 point margin. The team of Alice Asbury and Robyn Cassidy took the 1^st Female prize which is worthy of note as one of the ladies (no names) had never competed on anything like this before.

The OMM Lite Short Score title was closely fought with the top 7 teams all within 50 points of each other at the end of day 1. Day 2 saw some changes in the top placings but no one was able to catch Mark Nooney and Jon Cresswell who finished with 742 points. 2^nd place went to the family team of Graham and Sam Atkinson, a very strong effort as to qualify for the family prize one of the team must be aged 16 years or younger on the day of the event and taking 2^nd place overall against some experienced runners is a real achievement. 3^rd place was claimed by Richard Page and Neil Towers who produced solid performances on both days. Brendon and Alison Howe took the Mixed team prize and I hope that Alison enjoyed her first experience of an OMM event as much as Brendon enjoyed bringing her on it!

One of the significant differences between the OMM and the OMM Lite events is that they are not open access. Events are governed by different regulations than individuals and cannot use open access land without specific permissions in place. Unfortunately, some teams did take open access routes to some of the checkpoints. I took the decision to deduct the points gained from the checkpoints reached via these routes and allow all teams to remain competitive. This information will now also appear on the event maps for the next time in the Derbyshire Dales in April. It is absolutely vital that we maintain good relationships with landowners, organisations and tenants who manage, own and have responsibility for the areas in which we have the events and I would like to thank all f you for supporting us in this.

We were completely spoiled by fantastic weather over the weekend, well fed by Brenda and Stu at the event centre and presented with some great route choices by Steve Willis and his team. Jens Strain and Harvey Maps produced very good quality mapping for the event and I would also like to say a big thank you the North Yorkshire Scouts and all the other volunteers who willingly support the event.

The final thank you goes out to all of you who turned up and worked so hard over the weekend, offering some very interesting competition and hopefully enjoyed yourselves.

Next month the OMM comes around for the 48^th edition prior to OMM Japan in November and we are already looking forward to welcoming you to the OMM Lite and Bike in Derbyshire next April. It was great to see over 100 riders on the 4 courses competing at the same time and using the same controls as 160 runners. Everyone seemed to enjoy the spread of controls and the weather could not have been any better on Saturday. I was glad that no-one cleared up this time (unlike the Peak district in April) but Graham Tibbot still rode impressively well to win both days covering over 200k in the 12 hours. His score each day has been used to work out the points for the NYMBO league. I was pleased that OMM agreed to a 3 hour course each day and relieved that so many riders entered this option.

I have been asked to plan this event next year but I will make sure that it is the only event in September unlike this year.
