Congratulations to the leading riders (I’ll ask them to post their routes) and it was great to see 59 riders just 2 weeks before Christmas. I thoroughly enjoyed my ride without ever getting higher than 34 metres above sea level so no chance to relax as their were no down hill sections other than the railway bridges! My route was 11 20 26 3 1 19 2 8 6 15 4 7 24 30 28 18 16 14 23 10 and I was just disappointed that my map was folded just south of Helperby so I turned left 800m of #29. Thanks to Andrew for an excellent course which I thought was going to be too large when I saw the 1-60,000 map but he was right as usual. Andy Conn might have cleared up if he hadn’t split his tyre. Thanks to Jens for another excellent map and to the staff at the Blacksmiths Arms for their friendly welcome. Our next event is on January 21st at Beckwithshaw which will be slightly hillier. Hope to see you there.

First of all thank you all for coming, it was amazing to see so many people out in such warm weather. I hope you enjoyed yourselves. When Steve asked if I could organise a winter treasure hunt I was expecting about 10 people to turn up so was massively surprised when Steve said on Thursday that there were 40 pre entries.

The area around Newton, as you now know, is very flat so I decided to spread the controls out and use a 1:60,000 scale. Despite that there were some excellent high scores and Andy Conn had already scored 250 in his first hour before a puncture out a stop to his dominance. He might take an inner tube on his next race. The legend that is Tim Evans was the overall winner demonstrating just how good this sport is that a gentlemen of his maturity 😉 can perform so well. At the other end of the spectrum we had quite a number of young kids taking part which was great to see.

I need to start to put together a series of events for next year so please let me know if you would like to plan one on any of the following dates. I’m also very happy for anyone to suggest any other areas or dates

I will be asking the planners to act as the day organisers as well which happens in most other areas.   I have now taken over as Captain of Richmond Golf Club but I’m happy to co-ordinate the league again. It’s just that golf will have to take priority over mountain biking at weekends so I’m not sure how many events I will be able to attend. I will still look after the equipment and sort out the helpers beforehand and results, accounts and reports afterwards. Dave Robertson is happy to continue to keep the web page up to date and John Dixon will sort out the results.

Thanks to John Dixon for an excellent course in pleasantly undulating terrain on a cold but dry day. Thanks to Jens for yet another excellent map and the Fox & Rabbit for a warm welcome where we could warm our feet while eating an excellent lunch. Congratulations to the winners – Andy Conn Vet Men 455, Adrian & Luke Parker M21 362, Jenny Sutton W40 317,Shaun & Jane Joughin X40 267, Phill & Luke Collings (in his first event) Gen 265. Hopefully we will get a similar turnout at our next event at Newton on Ouse on December 10th.

What was your favourite event to ride this year?

if you can cast your mind back to Terrington in March maybe that’s the event you’d choose?

Or perhaps the sunshine that made the Stainforth, Dalby Forest and even the last event at Nidderdale just a bit more pleasant?

Perhaps you only rode one or two events this year so have made selection easy?

Whatever your reason, please vote for your favourite event this year and add any comments that might help plan next years events.

Usually I prefer a forest event, but having either missed a few this year it’s a toss up between Stainforth and Nidderdale…. where I found these sheep blocking my path.

I hope you enjoyed the excellent facilities at Sawley village hall with convenient adjacent parking and catering by the local ladies. The rain held off for most of you but there were some heavy showers towards the end of the day.

Conditions were much drier than anticipated as there had been no rain to speak of for 2 weeks so tracks that could have been a little muddy were not. Having the start in the centre of the map always gives more of a navigational challenge, I noticed quite a lot of hesitation as riders received their maps. Many riders chose to go south first, attracted by the closeness of controls; in fact the NE quadrant scored most points with 160, SE 115 and the other 2 quadrants 120 each. It is true that controls in the north were further apart but generally had faster routes between them.

Sadly vandals took a fancy to 2 controls – 38 was at a road junction, the SI box was stolen & the wire cut; 51 in the middle of nowhere completely disappeared, I will have a scout around this week to see if I can find any bits. This is one of the side effects of making the controls easily visible to riders, they are also often spotted by the public. 57 stopped working after 9 riders had passed through, presumably the battery gave out. If you have not informed Steve that you visited any of these 3 controls please let him know and he will adjust your score. Nobody visited control 32, a pity as there was a spot prize on it! There was one error in the map where the circle for 56 was drawn at the wrong bridleway junction (a parallel error as it is known in orienteering circles), I apologise for this oversight and hope that this did not cost you too much time.

Congratulations to the first 3 men: Graham Tibbot scored 405, Andrew Windrum 373 & Conrad Ellison 351; top ladies were Sue Booth on 269 followed by mixed pair Tony & Angela Brand-Parker.

Finally thank you to the control collectors Adrian Parker, Simon Coiley, John Rawden, Ray Morriss, David Lloyd, Andy & Corinne Parsons (only 1 of them under 50, where are the fit young riders at the end of the event?) You may not see much of me during the winter as I am having my ankle fused early November and will be in pot for a while. Hopefully it will then give me less trouble than it does now.
