There were 45 riders on a glorious day with fantastic views across North Yorkshire [the Black swan pub garden famously claims to have the longest view from any English beer garden – Ferrybridge power station is visible. We were last at Fearby in 2009 & I used a similar area this year.

I tried to have the pre-start far enough away from the actual start so that riders’ time did not start until they were closer to the start triangle. This mostly worked but there were a handful of devices that triggered at the pre-start so next time it needs to be even further from the start.

Most riders used phones [just 4 watches] with a few problems of phones going to sleep or losing signal. 3 tracks are missing from MapRun results, we are trying to get riders to upload these. Several riders had trouble locating #12; I am happy that the map is correct & the location on Google Earth is correct but accept that there is a multitude of tracks in the area & should have chosen a more identifiable spot for the control which was a henge [earthwork]/BW. Competitors who had difficulty in finding the control were all too far N but we have allowed any who visited Nutwith Common the 15 points. It is possible to widen the MapRun search area for this [or any] control by altering the tolerance: 3 horizontal lines in top RH corner of phone screen give options to widen the search.

There was a farm access road W of #16 which was not mapped & caused confusion, the next map will show this road.

MapRun penalties only work up to 5 mins late, so have been manually adjusted for those that exceeded this, giving nett scores of:   1st = David Lawrance M40 375 points, 2nd Nuno Cerqueira M21 361, 3rd Paul Dobson M60 325, all these riders went W then anticlockwise missing out the NW corner. M50 was won by Mark Rowley 324; M70 Steve Willis 304.

1st Lady = Sheila Pearce W50 280 points, 2nd Angela Brand-Barker W60 255; 1st Mixed Andrea & Steve Foster 244; Gen = Mark & Tom Simpson 150.

18 June 2022 – Control map

Next event is at Fearby on June 18th taking in the moors west of Masham

Registration: 0900 – 1015
Starts: 0930 – 1030

Venue: Fearby Village Hall HG4 4NF, GR SE 190 808

Parking for ~ 40 cars at rear of hall, after that please park tidily in the village. Registration, toilets & download in the hall. Start will be on the road outside Black Swan pub, finish on lane N of village hall, sufficient distance from the road so as not to inadvertently trigger the finish if riding through the village.

The area is a mixture of bridleways, country lanes & moorland tracks with plenty of climbs for the brave. There is also a tricky rocky bridleway which will require care

Here are  the draft results that will be sent to BMBO for incorporation into the BMBO league and used for the NYMBO League, please can you check yours are correct by the 10th June.

I thoroughly enjoyed my shorter ride round the lanes and really enjoyed not having to finish by going up white horse bank , thanks to Andy for an interesting course and obtaining permission to use the Rievaulx sporting estate tracks in Bradley Howl, Tanker Dale and Nettledale I made sure my route took me into them , sadly I also missed an easy 30 descending White Horse bank.

I hope you are all getting used to Maprun from a planners perspective it really does make life easier, this time we had the tolerance set at 25m which seemed to cause a couple of issues , so we may revert to 30m next time it depends where David places his controls. We also tried online tracking and this kept Andy amused whilst you were out and we will use again next time as it alerts is if you haven’t moved for 5 minutes , a useful but not failsafe safety feature as it doesn’t work with watches or poor mobile reception.

On the admin front please can you check your name on maprun is spelt correctly and you have your names the correct way round, I have to transfer the scores into the correct format for the BMBO league and if you all did this it would make my life much easier. We also spotted a few riders had gone down a footpath , in hindsight we  should have made this Out of Bounds as it was the continuation of a BOAT,  can I  remind you that footpaths marked on the map are always out of bounds as it can make future events harder to get permissions for if we get complaints.

Our next event is on June 18th on the moors above Masham planned by David Day – I look forward to seeing many of your there.

Our first league event for this year enjoyed sunshine and only a light breeze – a contrast from the previous few days.

All the MapRun results are available via the appp or at this link. Remember that these results aren’t adjusted for penalties.

Thanks to John Dixon for planning this event, here’s his report:

A few good days meant the tracks were dry for the 53 riders who turned up on a sunny Saturday at High Paradise. The course was (hopefully) laid out so that most people could reach the high scores
and the fitter/faster/smarter riders had to go a bit further to mop up the lower values.

In fact two riders – Andy Conn & Nuno Cerquiera cleaned up – Andy with an impressive 23minute margin. Most were comfortably home in just under the 3 hours with quite respectable scores. Just a reminder to be careful on the public highways.

Catering at High Paradise is first class and many stayed back to enjoy sandwiches, cake, coffee and scones afterwards.

This is early days for Maprun and although the benefits are numerous it does take some getting used to! More than one rider had to be guided by the ever so patient Tim Evans to get started.
There are lessons to be learned in recording starters and finishers but all in all a grand day out

The next NYMBO event takes place on Saturday 30th April, based at High Paradise Farm on the edge of the North York Moors.

8 events in 2022 — entry fees still really low, with 20% discount for early entry this year!

Key things to know about our events this year:

• MapRun – all events will use MapRun this year. It was very successful for us at the 5 winter events and saves th extra work putting our controls the day before and collecting them after the events.
• Start Times – all events, apart from the White Rose in August are currently planned to have starts between 0930-1030. However, we’d like your feedback on whether we should have some different options, you can vote in the poll here. We may make some adjustments to start times – but the first event at Paradise Farm will not change.
• 2022 Entry Fees – we’ve kept entry fees as low as we can, and we’re offering a discount this year too. Fuel is probably the biggest cost for everyone travelling to events, and with the current price increases hopefully this helps people a little bit.
• Online Entry – you’ll be able to enter online until midnight on Thursday, as we did last year. However, you’ll get a 20% discount if you enter by Wednesday night. This enables us to keep online entry open until Thursday but an incentive to enter earlier. This is a bit of test – we’ll see how it works and, if we need to, make any changes.
• Entry on the Day – this could be available this season for riders who’ve been unable to enter before the online entry deadline. However, it will depend on how many spare maps there are and riders will need to be the last to depart when the pre-registered riders have all set-off. Please enter in advance if you are able to and guarantee a map!
