David Day planned an excellent course with plenty of route choice but probably enough distance for a 4 hour event which is why the scores were lower than usual. However, as most riders got back before it started to rain heavily, they were probably happy not to have to ride the extra hour. We were therefore lucky again with the weather and the tracks were still firm despite the previous day’s heavy showers.

Thanks as ever to Jens for another excellent map; David Day for putting out all of the controls; Geoff Moorhouse, Karen Blackburn, Michael Brough & John Dixon for their help on the day; then Dave Lloyd, John Rawden, Ray Morriss, Simon Coiley, Adrian Parker, Andy & Corinne Parsons for collecting them in so that we could leave by 3.00.

It was great to see over 70 riders for the final event of the season including quite a few newcomers. Congratulations to Graham Tibbot (M21) who won with 405 points and turn the tables on Andrew Windrum (M40-373); Conrad Ellison rode well to finish 3^rd overall with 351 in M50; followed by Ray Morriss (M60-255) & Roger de Faye (M70-245) In the Women’s section, Sue Booth won W50 with 269, Jo Anderson & Jemima Parker won W40 & Karen Blackburn W70 with 190, followed by Clare de Faye (W60-174) then Heather Tufts (W21-170). Angela & Tony Brand-Barker came back from Lithuania to win X50 with 268 (50 points ahead of Steve & Andrea Foster). You can follow all of their routes using the splits file and course map.

I enjoyed my ride as it brought back pleasant memories of the tracks I used to ride regularly from Aldborough when I first started mountain biking. I chose to ride the bridleways rather than take the quicker road options which cost me time but were far more enjoyable. I stayed south of the main road and finished on the very interesting and scenic causeway below Sawley Hall.

Unfortunately 2 controls (38 & 51) were stolen, 57 wasn’t working properly and 56 was in the wrong place. (David put it where he had marked it on his planning map and hadn’t noticed that Jens had drawn it on the final map). So not the best way to finish the season and please accept our apologies. Hopefully, I have amended all of the scores but please let me know if I have missed you out.

Prizes were awarded to the leading riders at 1.30 so thanks to Rob & Anne Wiltshire at the Yorkshire Dales Brewery who are happy to sponsor the league again next year.

The next event will be a 2 hour Lanequest MBO near Northallerton on Saturday, 19^th November. (Details on the BMBO and NYMBO web sites). John Dixon, Andrew Windrum & Tim Evans have volunteered to plan 3 of the 4 winter events so please let me know if you would like to plan the February event in the Malton/Pickering area.

Comments from David Day – the planner for this event

We return to Sawley village hall this year, last used in 2011. The area slopes from purple heather moors in the west to Studley deer park in the east. At the time of writing the bridleways are in excellent condition and the views fantastic. Many bridleways cross farmland – please close all gates; also used are quiet minor roads but the B 6265 passes through the centre of the area, there will be some traffic on this but optimum routes do not follow this road.

Points to remember, all marked on the map:

• In the north there is 1 ford over the River Laver where there is no footbridge which I have never successfully cycled through due to it’s cobble bottom, there may be cyclists out there who can do better …..
• The bridleway bridge north of Woodfield House is closed but optimum routes do not go that way.
• There is a useful door in the north wall of Studley deer park.

For this event I plan to use ‘gripples’ to secure the controls, they are the foot O version of our wires, they are much thinner and it is easier to put your dibber in the SI box, also quicker to put out & take in – let us know what you think to them.
Food is being sold by the ladies of the village hall – please support them whilst waiting for prize giving after the event.

MTBO
The final event in the MTBO league took place in Hamsterley Forest at the wee! kend. Phil Collins produced some challenging courses that made good use of the extensive single track in the forest. The League prize giving took place immediately afterwards. Congratulations to Ian Nixon and Charlie Somers Cocks who both retained their overall titles. Also well done to Killian Lomas, Tim Evans, Steve Willis, Ben Houlihan and Mary Carrick who won their age classes. The event also substituted for the Middle Distance Championship due to the cancellation of the final event. MBO Score star Graham Tibbott showed his versatility by winning the title in his first ever MTBO event. Charlie SC took the honours in the women’s race.
Many thanks to the planners of this year’s events for all of their hard work without which it would not happen.

MBO Score
Just eight events remain in the MBO Score League. Remember that it is your best 10 events that count including a maximum of 6 from any one local league.
Prize giving for the MBO Score League will take place at the Cannock Chase Event on 6th November and will ! be followed by the AGM.

-New Zealand MTBO Championships-
Just a REMINDER too that both the North Island Champs and NZ Champs take place on succeeding weekends from 12th to 20th November 2016 on some of the best MTBO terrain in this beautiful world! http://nimtbo.aoa.org.nz/. These incorporate the first two World Masters Races of the 2017 season and give at least five fabulous races in 9 days of NZ. On a personal note the legendary MTBO terrain “Marquita’s Garden” for the North Island Champs is probably the best MTBO terrain I’ve ever raced on! This then moves onto Rotorua the following weekend where the terrain ranks amongst the very best mtb riding in the world and is a place of pilgrimage for all mountain bikers. “This is My Church” 🙂

-World Masters Series 2017-
In order that people can plan ahead here are the dates so far in the new 2017 season starting in New Zealand in November 2016. As in previous years the format will be 15 races in total with the 7 best performances to count in five year age categories. There will be two counting races at each event except for the World Masters Champs where there will be three counting races. Please note the points and prizes are awarded in FIVE year age classes.

We are currently examining a number of options for an event in May/June in Central Europe with Poland a possibility. Sadly it has been deemed that the planned race in Turkey would not attract sufficient competitors in the current political/! security climate despite the excellent event this season.

There w! ill now be an opportunity to MTBO for 11 days out of 12 in early July by connecting Czech Pilsen event and Austrian WRE event and training days near Vienna thanks to my club OLT TransDanubien. Book your holidays now for 8 races (including 4 World Masters Series!) and 3 training days all in one unprecedented MTBO Gift for you! All leading up to the World Masters Championships in late July/Early August in Orleans!

I’ve thoroughly enjoyed all of my rides checking all of the bridleways and controls this summer but the weather and track conditions at the weekend couldn’t have been any better. The bridleways across Levisham Moor and Glaisdale Moor are 2 of my favourites in England. I hoped that I had made the optimum route long enough so that no riders would be able to clear up on either day. Mark McPhilips tried his hardest and only left out one control on Saturday but he left a few more out there on Sunday. I placed all of the controls on routes that could be reached by bike but hopefully gave the runners plenty of opportunities to use public footpaths as short cuts. Thanks to Karen & Richard Clark for checking out many of these. The favourable comments from many Bike & Lite competitors suggest that I succeeded.

Thanks to North Yorkshire Moors National Park, Forestry Commission and the Countryside Landowners Association who were happy for the event to go ahead. We will be making donations to them and the Scarborough & Ryedale Mountain Rescue Team who would have been there if we had needed them. Thanks also to the gamekeepers who were happy for us to use many of the private tracks across their grouse moors.

It was great to see 130 riders competing at the same time and using the same controls as 170 runners as well as no litter or open gates when we collected them in. It’s a pity that only 8 riders made it to the Wild Camp so we will need to consider whether to continue with this course next year or open it up to runners!!

Thanks to Jens Strain and Harveys for 2 excellent maps. I’m sorry that there were 3 corrections but we only got permission to use the permissive bridleway through RAF Fylingdales, the track though Low Staindale and the track near Lastingham after the map had gone to the printers. Thanks also to John Rawden, Ray Morriss, Dave Lloyd, John Dixon, Michael Brough, Zoe Cowgill, Steve Kendall, Sheila Pearce and Lynn Lloyd for helping me put out and collect in the controls, the OMM team for their hard work organising the excellent event HQ and Phil Lee and his staff at the New Inn.

Sion James is planning the Spring event so I won’t get my monthly rides around the Derbyshire Dales this winter but I will look forward to competing in the Brecon Beacons. However, I will be planning the September event in Wensleydale so I can check out the bridleways closer to home this summer.

Here are the scores for the NYMBO League based on the best points per hour.

On Saturday Max Vesty scored 450 points which equals 750 for 5 hours and 1050 for 7 hours

On Sunday, Tim Evans scored 481 points which equals 640 for 4 hours and 800 for 5 hours

I have only worked out the scores for riders who have featured in previous NYMBO events this year. Please let me know if I have missed you out or made any mistakes. John Dixon will work out the League scores which I will post so that you can see how hard you need to ride at Nidderdale.

The next two events are on Saturday 17th and Sunday 18th September.

Dave Lloyd planned an excellent course with plenty of route choice and just the right length. Andrew Windrum did somehow manage to clear up but it meant that everyone else got better scores than usual. The map is getting a bit old and lots have tracks have changed. Some are getting overgrown and some of the single track routes which are no longer used have fallen into disrepair – especially just south of the Crosscliffe viewpoint as I found out. We were lucky again with the weather and the tracks were still fairly firm despite the previous day’s heavy rain. All of your comments were very positive which makes our job very rewarding.

Thanks as ever to Jens for another excellent map and he will be updating it this winter; Dave Lloyd for putting out all of the controls on Sunday; Geoff Moorhouse, John Dixon, Frank & Sandra Appleton for their help on the day; then Dave Lloyd, John Rawden, Ray Morriss, Steve Kendall, Graham Tibbot, Andrew & Catherine Windrum for collecting them in so that we could all leave by 6.

It was great to see over 80 riders again at an event including quite a few newcomers and families. Sorry for 2 errors in the results. I didn’t realise that Adrian Parker and Katy Cawthorn were using different dibbers and after they had downloaded I couldn’t pair them up with their partners.

Congratulations to Andrew Windrum (M40) who scored the maximum 525 points with 6 minutes to spare and turn the tables on Graham Tibbot M21-510. Peter Swanborough had an excellent ride to win M50 for the first time with 454, the same score as Adrian & Luke Parker in the Generation class. Nick Dallimore won M60 – 440 and Roger de Faye won M70 with 399 which would have placed him 3^rd in M60 behind John Dixon’s excellent 400 points. In the Women’s section Sheila Pearce won W40 with 426, Jill Ellison 405 in W50 and Clare de Faye 330 in W60. Angela & Tony Brand-Barker had an excellent ride to win X50 with 385 points. Finally, I must mention 10 year old Laura Barber riding with her Dad, (Jeffrey). They scored 345 points at Dalby and had ridden the 4 hour event at Malham on Saturday followed by the Junior Fell Race!! Very impressive. You can follow all of their routes using the splits file and course map on the NYMBO site.

I enjoyed my ride as usual and decided to avoid the riggs and dales to the SW so headed east. The tracks were great, the scenery was tremendous between 36 and 59 then again between 52 and 35 and the single tracks in Dargate Slack and Tom Milner’s Grain were challenging (once I had found the way into them from 35). #50 wasn’t quite in the right place so I hope you didn’t waste any time there.

The next events in the NYMBO league are part of the OMM Bike weekend at Cropton on September 17^th/18^th. All 4 courses count on both days and you can enter the 3 hour option on the BMBO site. However, you need to enter the longer courses on the OMM web site and the event is nearly full so don’t leave it too late.
